CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus Women's Volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by Washington College (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
Junior
Caroline Sherman led the Bears with a match-high 16 kills and added six digs as well. First-year
Daejah Bazemore recorded seven kills on a strong .467 hitting percentage and sophomore
Mel Eglinton matched her with seven kills while adding a team-high 10 digs. Junior
Rachel Bernard led the offense with 19 assists while sophomore
Erin Dychdala tallied 16 assists.
Ursinus started strong in the first set as they won the first two points and stretched their early lead out to 6-2. The Bears worked their lead out to 12-8 before the Shorewomen won 12 of the next 14 points to take a 20-14 advantage. The Bears would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as that run from the Shorewomen ultimately decided the first set.
The Bears gained the early advantage again in the second set as they went up 5-2 but Washington College countered by winning seven of the next eight points to go up 9-6. Ursinus won four of the next five points to tie the second set at 10 before the Shorewomen answered again by winning five of the next six points to go up 15-11. Ursinus continued the back and forth run theme by taking seven of the next nine points to go up 18-17 only to be answered by another extended Shorewomen run as they won six of the next eight points to go up 23-20. Ursinus won three straight points to tie the set at 23 but Washington won the set by winning the next two points.
The Shorewomen took an early 4-1 lead in the third set before the Bears won three straight points to tie the set at four. Washington College worked their way out to a 9-6 lead and went on a run of taking six of seven points to take their largest lead of the set at 15-9. The Bears got within one point of the Shorewomen twice in the set, but Washington closed the set and match with four straight points after leading 21-20.
Giselle Kleinbussink led the Shorewomen with a kill-dig double-double of 11 apiece and Raegan Moran posted a team-high 15 assists while adding 10 digs.
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, October 18th as they will host Franklin & Marshall at 7:00 p.m.
