BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Behind three goals in the first quarter, the No. 24 Ursinus College field hockey team suffered a 4-0 setback to Bryn Mawr on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, Ursinus moves to 9-8 overall and 5-6 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Owls improved to 11-6 on the season and 6-4 in conference action.
The Owls recorded the first two shots on goal during the 7
th minute as Palladinetti and the Bears defense denied each opportunity to keep the contest scoreless. Ursinus received their first penalty corner at the 10:28-mark, but a foul was called on the Bears negating the shot attempt. Moments later, Bryn Mawr capitalized with the opening goal of the contest during the 11
th minute. For the Owls, Ilona Bender's shot was tipped by Eva Yacura and snuck past the Bears defense into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. The Owls extended their lead to 2-0 at the 12:55-mark when Bryn Mawr's Maggie Barilla converted a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season. With the momentum, Bryn Mawr added a third goal in the first period, as a shot from Hazel Miller was deflected by Thekla Jubinville and found the back of the cage for her third goal of the season. The Bears battled back recording two shots in the remaining moments of the first half, but Bryn Mawr's Charlene Basque tallied saves on each attempt. Much of the second stanza was a battle of the midfielders as each team struggled to create offensive opportunities on goal until the Bears were awarded a penalty corner during the 22
nd minute. During the corner attempt, junior defender
Maeve Montgomery had her back handed shot saved by the Owls defense resulting in a 3-0 deficit at the halftime break.
During the third quarter, each team collected a shot on goal, but it was the Owls capitalizing at the end of the period to extend their advantage to four. After back-to-back penalty corners, Bryn Mawr's Novy Goetgeluk sent a lifted line drive shot through the Bears defense and into the back of the cage for a goal. Bryn Mawr and Ursinus each created one scoring opportunity a piece in the final stanza, but a save from both netminders kept the score at 4-0 when the final whistle occurred.
Bryn Mawr held a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in penalty corners. Bryn Mawr's Charlene Basque earned the victory in goal behind five saves, meanwhile
Adriana Palladinetti suffered the loss tallying a game-high eight saves.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they celebrate Senior and Homecoming in a non-conference matchup against Ithaca College.
