COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A goal in the final two minutes of regulation sent the No. 16 Ursinus Field Hockey team to a dramatic 2-1 win over No. 25 Swarthmore on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action at the Snell Alumnae Field.
With the win, the Bears improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in Centennial Conference action while avenging their setback last season to the Garnet. It was the fourth win for the Bears this season against an opponent ranked in the NFHCA National poll. Meanwhile, the Garnet fell to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in Centennial Conference action while seeing their seven-game win streak snapped.
Ursinus put the pressure on early in the first minute as they had two shots saved within a three-second span by Garnet goalkeeper Cassandra Conklin. The Bears had two more excellent chances to score in the sixth minute when senior
Regan Horting had a shot saved and junior
Mary Lauren Franz had a rebound knocked away by a Swarthmore defender. The pressure paid off in the 11th minute when first-year
Marie Brainard worked around two defenders and beat Conklin on the left side of the net to put Ursinus up 1-0. The Bears were awarded a penalty stroke just 1:07 later, but sophomore
Rachel Buono sent her shot just wide to keep the lead at one. Ursinus controlled everything in the first quarter as they held an 11-1 shot advantage, but the second quarter it became all Garnet as they tied the game at one in the 27th minute. Swarthmore held a 9-4 shot advantage in the second quarter and limited the Bears to just two shots on goal during those 15 minutes.
The Garnet had the first best chance of the second half when a pair of shots from a penalty corner in the 38th minute were turned away by junior
Maeve Montgomery. Ursinus turned the flow of the game back to a feel of the first quarter by hammering away multiple shots on net in the final two minutes of the quarter. Ursinus had four shots saved during that stretch after being awarded four penalty corners but were unable to break the tie. Swarthmore saw a shot from a rush downfield turned away two minutes into the fourth quarter and the Bears had a pair go just wide of the net. Sophomore
Remi Lloyd delivered for Ursinus with 2:31 left in regulation when she knocked in an initial shot from classmate
Gigi Testa that hit the post for a goal. The Garnet were awarded one last penalty corner with 17 seconds left in regulation and sent a shot from the middle wide left of the net that preserved the win for the Bears.
Ursinus held a 28-15 shot advantage for the game and a 13-6 edge in shots on goal. The Bears held a decisive 18-6 edge in penalty corners as well. Sophomore goalkeeper
Adriana Palladinetti earned the win after making three saves in the full 60 minutes. Conklin suffered the loss despite a valiant 10-save effort in the full time.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 7th as they will travel to face Washington College at 7:00 p.m.
