Huge Second Quarter Propels Football Over Gettysburg, 48-35

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Behind a big first half, the Ursinus football team defeated Gettysburg 48-35 on the road on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

With the win, the Bears improved to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Bullets fell to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Junior quarterback Jalen Bradford had a big day by totaling 312 yards through the air on 18-of-30 passing with four touchdown passes to two interceptions. He also added 31 yards on the ground with a touchdown as well. Classmate Justin Collier paced the Bears wide receivers with seven catches for 108 yards and two touchdown receptions. Junior wide receiver Cameron Dennis snatched a pair of touchdown receptions as well while grabbing three passes for 54 yards. Sophomore Cody House added three catches for 82 yards in the win.

Junior running back Tony Holden rushed for a career-high 184 yards on 22 carries while adding a pair of touchdowns. Senior fullback Dawson Fresses finished near the century mark with 97 yards on 17 carries. The teams combined for 1,040 yards of total offense which was the most in a Bears game since totaling 1,010 with Dickinson in 2014.

Ursinus shrugged off a pair of turnovers on their first two drives of the game and kept the Bullets off the scoreboard when junior cornerback Anthony Esposito blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt at the 4:16-mark of the first quarter. Bradford took advantage of the block by hitting on three lengthy passes with the third being a 17-yard touchdown strike to Dennis to put Ursinus up 7-0 with 2:24 left in the first quarter.

The Bullets responded on the first play of the second quarter with a 64-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at seven. The long touchdown started a flurry of offense as the Bears countered with a 7-play 65-yard drive to take the lead back at 14-7 when Bradford found Collier from 13 yards out.  The duo connected again one drive later after gaining short field to extend the Bears advantage to 21-7 with 5:42 left in the first half. Gettysburg drove just outside the red zone on their next drive until a fumble gave the ball back to the Bears. One play later, Holden broke loose for a 77-yard touchdown to give the Bears a 28-7 advantage with 2:42 left in the second quarter. Bradford capped the monster offensive quarter for Ursinus by scrambling for 26-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds left in the second quarter that gave the Bears a 35-7 lead into the locker rooms.

Fresses fumbled on the second play of the third quarter which set the Bullets up with short field position to cut the Bears lead down to 35-14 at the 11:58-mark. Things began to get a little interesting after the next drive when Bradford was intercepted for a touchdown by Matt Mikulka to make it a 35-20 game following a failed extra point. The Gettysburg momentum continued after forcing a Bears punt and using the ground game to cut the Bears down to 35-28 after converting on a two-point conversion. Ursinus finally put a halt to the Bullets rally by driving 79 yards in nine plays to make it a 42-28 game, capped by a 16-yard touchdown run from Holden. The drive was kept alive with a Gettysburg pass interference on a 3rd and 6 from near midfield.

Dennis put the finishing touches on the Bears win with his second touchdown of the day, this time from 15 yards out, to put Ursinus up 48-28 following a missed extra point. Gettysburg added one last touchdown before Ursinus ran the clock out.

Junior defensive end Connor Carter led the Ursinus defense with a career-high 11 tackles (three solo) and one fumble recovery while sophomore Sean Spinosa tallied eight tackles (three solo), 2.0 TFL, and one sack. Senior Ryan Bodolus added a sack to his Centennial-leading total while adding six stops (three solo) and Esposito tallied four tackles (three solo) along with an interception plus blocked XP.

Bullets quarterback Rocco Abdinoor went 24-of-34 for 316 yards and tossed a pair of touchdown passes along with an interception. He also added 27 yards on the ground with one touchdown. Wide receiver Ryan McAndrew caught seven passes for 130 yards and a touchdown while Walle Harwigsson reeled in 10 catches for 116 yards plus a score.

The Bears will conclude their regular season next Saturday, November 11th as they will host Dickinson for senior day at 1:00 p.m. with Centennial-MAC Bowl series positioning on the line.
