Men's Hoops Pulls Away From Washington College, 85-60

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus Men's Basketball team used an overpowering second half to cruise to an 85-60 win over Washington College on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
 

With the win, the Bears improved to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in Centennial Conference action. Ursinus moved into a three-way tie for third place in the Centennial Conference standings with Gettysburg and Muhlenberg. Meanwhile, the Shoremen dropped to 3-19 overall and 2-14 in conference play.
 
 
Sophomore Marlin Wise impressed again for the Bears off the bench as he led all scorers on the floor with 16 points off a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and going 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Wise also tallied eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal in the win. Sophomore Cole Grubbs posted a double-double behind 15 points and 10 rebounds while junior Trevor Wall recorded 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Freshman Nick Nocito rounded out the scorers in double figures with 13 points behind going 3-of-5 from distance.
 
 
The Bears got off to a lightning fast start from the field as they jumped out to a 12-3 advantage at the 14:58-mark of the first half. Ursinus built its advantage out to 17-5 at the 13:37-mark of the first half before seven-straight points from the Shoremen cut the lead down to 17-12. The Bears responded to the run with a 17-9 burst of their own to take their largest lead of the first half at 34-21 with 4:38 before halftime. However, the Shoremen battled back with a 15-2 run to make it a two-point game at 38-36 with just 1:17 left in the first half. Despite the run, Wall and senior Ryan Hughes gave the Bears a lift into the half by scoring the final five points of the half to go up 43-37.
 
 
Ursinus carried that last-minute momentum into the second half as they used a 10-1 run to go up 53-38 at the 16:34-mark. The Bears did not let their lead go into single digits for the remainder of the contest nor go below 12 points following the run. Washington College made it a 12-point game at 63-51 with 10:38 remaining in regulation after the Bears stretched its lead to 19 points before Ursinus put the finishing touches on the win with a 19-4 run to go up 27 points.
 
 
The Bears went 28-of-53 from the field (52.8%) and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from three-point range behind going 5-of-8 from deep in the second half. Ursinus shot an even 70 percent (21-of-30) from the free throw line and held a sizable 39-27 rebounding advantage. Meanwhile, the Shoremen shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field and 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from three-point range. Washington College shot 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the free throw line and got 25 points from its bench.
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, February 15th as they will host Muhlenberg for a key Centennial Conference battle at 6:00 p.m.
