Fourth Quarter Sinks Women's Hoops Against Johns Hopkins in Finale

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's Basketball team closed out its 2022-23 regular season with a 62-41 setback to Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.
 
 
The Bears closed their season out with a 9-16 overall record and 6-14 mark in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays locked up the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament with their 20-5 overall record and 17-3 mark in conference play.
 
 
Sophomore Chinwe Irondi capped a dominant season with a game-high 27 points and 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Her 429 points were the sixth most in a single season for the Bears and 255 rebounds tied for the seventh-most all-time. Prior to the game, the Bears honored seniors Alyssa Martin and Margrett Brown as a part of senior day ceremonies.
 
 
Irondi scored the first points of the contest at the 7:21-mark of the first quarter as each team slugged it out on defense early on. Ursinus built and advantage up to 8-4 with 2:01 left in the first quarter before the Blue Jays closed the final two minutes on a 5-1 run to tie the game at nine. Hopkins opened the second quarter with five-straight points to go up 14-9 before Ursinus countered with six-straight of their own to go up 15-14 at the 4:55-mark. The Blue Jays responded to take an 18-15 lead just under a minute later until the upset-minded Bears countered with four-straight points to take a 19-18 advantage at the 1:22-mark. Irondi then made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 21 entering halftime.
 
 
Irondi once again opened a new half with the first points to give Ursinus a 23-21 lead and scored all but 1 of the Bears 11 third quarter points. The Bears took a 30-29 lead following a free throw from junior Natalie Mehl at the 3:52-mark before the Blue Jays closed the third quarter out with a 10-2 run to go up 39-30 into the final 10 minutes. The run was a sign of things to come as the Blue Jays ultimately put the game away with a 15-2 burst to go up 54-34 with 4:13 left in regulation.
 
 

The Bears shot just 27.7 percent (13-of-47) from the field and 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from beyond the arc. Ursinus shot 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free throw line as well. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays shot 45 percent (27-of-60) from the field after going 60 percent (18-of-30) in the second half. Hopkins went 4-of-12 (33.3%) from deep and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. The Blue Jays also held a sizable 41-29 rebounding advantage in the contest.
 

Olivia Parisi led the Blue Jays with a team-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds.
