Offense Sparks Women's Lacrosse Past Albright, 15-7

READING, Pa. – Sophomore Grace Lynch netted five goals leading the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team to a 15-7 victory over Albright College on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Bears moved to 1-1 on the season meanwhile the Lions fell to 1-2 overall.

Ursinus jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back outscoring Albright 10-6 over the final three stanzas. Senior Reilly Morgan finished with three goals behind her first hattrick of the season, while junior Mary Michaud and sophomores Maeve Leonzi and Julia McCann each finished with two goals.

The Bears jumped on the board quickly, just nine seconds into the game as first-year Meghan Vizian won the opening draw control and fellow first-year Ashley Noto found Morgan for her first goal of the contest at the 14:51-mark. After the Bears defense denied back-to-back shots from the Lions, Ursinus added another goal as Grace Lynch found the back of the net to give Ursinus a 2-0 advantage. Over the next three minutes, each team was credited with a turnover, but McCann caused a Lions turnover leading to Lynch finding Leonzi on the offensive end for a Bears' goal. With 8:22 remaining in the opening quarter, the Lions answered with a goal to cut their deficit to two after Chole Fornoff scored. The Bears controlled much of the possession over the remaining minutes of the first period and increased their lead to four as Morgan found the back of the net and Lynch capitalized on a free position goal to give Ursinus a 5-1 lead after the first period.

Ursinus carried the momentum into the opening minute of the second quarter as Morgan and Lynch each secured their hattricks with goals to increase the Bears lead to six. Each defense stepped up over the next six minutes of action as the Bears fended off multiple shots from the Lions. Senior goalkeeper Alexa Machado collected two saves over the six minutes of scoreless action. With 6:15 remaining in the half, the Lions cut the deficit to five with a free position goal from Ashleigh Tortorice. Just two minutes later, Albright added their second goal of the period as Kayte Moist scored for the Lions to cut the Bears lead to four. With under a minute remaining, the Bears answered with a goal from Vizian as Leonzi found her cutting in front of the net to give Ursinus an 8-3 lead. Albright won the ensuing draw control but a huge save from Machado led to a Bears goal in the final seconds as Julia McCann scored her first goal of the contest to give Ursinus a 9-3 lead at halftime.

Ursinus opened the second half with back-to-back goals over a two-minute span increasing their lead to 11-3 at the 11:04-mark. The Bears were a woman down as a yellow card was issued for Ursinus, but McCann collected her second goal of the contest off of a free position opportunity. Two minutes later, after an Albright turnover, Vizian added yet another assist finding Lynch for an Ursinus goal. Albright defense stepped up shutting down the Bears offense over the remainder of the third quarter and added three consecutive goals to cut their deficit to five after three quarters. Albright's offense spread the wealth around as Tortorice, Fornoff, and Lauren China each added goals in the third period.

With Ursinus leading 11-6, the Bears bounced back with a goal from Leonzi to open the fourth quarter at the 12:24-mark. The Bears kept the momentum rolling with back-to-back goals as Mary Michaud scored with 11:36 remaining in the period and Lynch added her fifth of the contest at the 10:37-mark.
