Andrusiewicz's Gem Leads Softball to Split with Catholic

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team used a stellar pitching to split their doubleheader with Catholic on Saturday afternoon at the Snell Softball Field. The Bears shut out the Cardinals 2-0 in game one before being edged 2-1 in the second game.

The Bears record moves to 10-6 overall following the split while the Cardinals of the Landmark move to 8-6 overall.

Game 1: Ursinus 2, Catholic 0

First-year pitcher Christa Andrusiewicz surrendered a pair of singles to open the game before a wild pitch put runners on second and third base. However, Andrusiewicz stood tall by retiring the next three batters to keep the game scoreless. Pitching ruled the contest as the game went scoreless into the bottom of the fifth with neither team being able to advance a runner past second base after the top of the first. Junior Maddie Solow tripled to lead off the bottom half of the fifth for the Bears first hit of the contest and came around to score on an infield single in the next at-bat by senior Allyson Meakim. Ursinus brought home an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after sophomore Stephanie Wichman brought home sophomore Samantha Mallen with a single. Mallen helped create the run after singling, stealing second, and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Andrusiewicz closed the door on her second complete game shutout of the season by working around a single/error in the top of the seventh. She finished the day with just four hits allowed, four strikeouts, and just one walk in the win.

Game 2: Catholic 2, Ursinus 1

The second game played out similarly to start like the first game as the game went scoreless after the first three and a half innings. Senior pitcher Alexis Miller worked her way out of a first and third one-out jam in the top of the second before dodging trouble following a pair of walks in the third. First-year Kayla Carr doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and came around to break the scoreless tie on an error following a single from Solow. Miller surrendered a double with one out in the top of the sixth and was replaced for Wichman in the next at-bat. However, Katie Scolese delivered the crushing blow of the contest with a two-run opposite field home run to put the Cardinals in front for the first time in the doubleheader. First-year Jessica Pizzo kept the Bears alive with a two-out single in the seventh and advanced into scoring range off a wild pitch. Unfortunately for the Bears, a called third strike ended the game in the next at-bat.

Miller was strong in the circle for the Bears by allowing just one earned run on four hits in 5.1 innings while striking out one and walking three. Mallen and Solow each had hits in each contest for the Bears. Aubyrnn Arcement earned the win in game two for Catholic after allowing one unearned run on four hits in five innings while striking out a pair.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 21st as they will host Gwynedd Mercy for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
