Drew Tops Women's Lacrosse, 17-13

MADISON, N.J. – The Ursinus College women's lacrosse was unable to overcome a second half deficit eventually falling to Drew University by a score of 17-13 on Saturday afternoon from Ranger Stadium.
 

With the loss, the Bears fall to 2-4 on the season meanwhile the Rangers of the Landmark Conference improved to 2-3 overall.

 
Sophomores Grace Lynch and Julia McCann each finished with a team-high three goals and six points, while first-year Ashley Noto tallied three points behind two assists and one goal.

 
The Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over the first four minutes of action as McCann netted her first two goals of the contest off free positions opportunities. On each opportunity McCann sprinted towards the net before sneaking her shot past the Rangers netminder. Drew quickly answered netting their first two goals of the game to tie the contest at two a piece with 9:15- remaining in the period. After a Bears turnover, Drew capitalized scoring back-to-back goals regaining a 4-2 lead at the 3:55-mark of the first period. Each team was credited with two turnovers over the final three minutes with the Bears almost creating a goal in the final seconds, but a save from Drew kept the deficit at two.

 
The Bears quickly responded at the start of the second quarter as junior Mary Michaud found Lynch for a goal cutting the Bears deficit to one at the 14:24-mark. After a defensive rotation, Lynch was left open in front of the net and capitalized for the goal. Lynch's goal started a 2-0 run for Ursinus over the next two minutes as Lynch connected for her second and Michaud added her first from a free position opportunity. Michaud's goal regained a 5-4 lead for Ursinus with 12:44 remaining in the first half. The Rangers tied it at five a piece at the 10:49-mark of the quarter, before Ursinus recaptured the lead 30 seconds later, behind a goal from Ashley Noto. After a yellow card on Ursinus, the Rangers continued to battle back tying the game at six a piece at the 8:43-mark.

 
The Bears responded with a goal from sophomore Maeve Leonzi to regain a 7-6 lead with 5:46 remaining in the half, before the Rangers added back-to-back goals to recapture an 8-7 lead at the 2:48-mark. Ursinus quickly tied the contest at eight a piece at the 1:50-mark as Michaud added her second goal of the game to tie the contest heading into the break.

 
The Rangers jumped out to an early second-half advantage scoring three goals over the span of 50 seconds to regain an 11-8 lead. Drew's Ella Champigny scored back-to-back goals after earning consecutive draw controls and extending the Rangers lead to three. McCann answered for Ursinus at the 7:10-mark collecting her third goal of the contest cutting the Bears deficit to two. Senior Reilly Morgan and Leonzi each netted a score over the next minute to tie the contest at eleven a piece with 6:10 remaining in the period. Drew answered with back-to-back goals over the closing minutes and ended the third stanza with a 13-11 lead.


Drew carried the momentum in the final period scoring the first two goals of the quarter extending their lead to 15-11 with 10:51 remaining in the quarter. Each offense stalled out over the next three minutes until Drew added back-to-back goals extending their lead to six with 4:21 to play. The Bears responded by winning the ensuing draw control and first-year Skylar Bogdan connected for her second goal of the season while being a woman down. Lynch added the final goal of the contest for the Bears with 1:42 remaining as Drew collected the 17-13 victory.
 

In net, Machado was dealt the loss after allowing 11 goals (four saves) over 33 minutes of action while first-year Camille Hubbs earned three saves (six goals allowed) over 26 minutes of play. Drew's Anna Home earned the win in net collecting 15 saves on 28 attempts. Ursinus held a 37-32 advantage in shots with each team being credited with 18 turnovers. The Rangers finished with a 68.1% (15-of-22) on clears while holding the Bears at 50% (9-of-18).
 

The Bears return to action on Wednesday as they host Delaware Valley University at 4 p.m. from Patterson Field.
