COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but a late inning rally sparked Ramapo College past the Bears 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, Ursinus falls to 8-13 on the season meanwhile the Roadrunners improved to 10-6 overall.
First-year right-hander
Dan Bass earned the start on the mound for Ursinus and opened the contest retiring the side in order during the top frame. The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the first frame scoring three runs off two hits and one error. After a lineout to open the bottom of the first, sophomore
Jordan Williams and senior
Solomon Griffith each reached base via a hit-by-pitch. After a strikeout, Ursinus scored three runs on singles by senior
Nick Diaz and sophomore
Peter Balos.
In the second, the Roadrunners put two runners on with just one out, but Bass escaped any damage after recording a fly out and pop out to end the threat. Ursinus stretched their lead to 4-0 in the second inning as sophomore
Jakob Cantor crossed the plate on RBI groundout from Williams. The Bears stranded runners on the corners as a lineout to centerfield ended the Ursinus rally. Bass cruised through the third inning retiring the side in order behind a groundout and back-to-back fly outs.
In the fourth inning, Ramapo scored their first run (unearned) of the contest on a sacrifice fly before Bass stranded a runner in scoring position with a flyout to right field. Ursinus went down in order in the bottom half of the frame and still held a 4-1 lead through four innings. In the fifth inning, Ramapo opened with a runner reaching second base after a Bears error with one out. Bass settled in and recorded a ground out and pop out to end the Roadrunners rally.
In the bottom of the fifth, Balos tallied his second hit of the day with a single down the right field line. He would advance into scoring position with his second stolen base of the season, but a strikeout stranded him at second to end the threat. Bass continued to keep the visitor's bats off-balance in the sixth inning as he recorded three straight groundouts to sophomore
Andrew Richter at third base.
Cantor led off the bottom of the sixth with a single into left field and later advanced to second as sophomore
Dylan Runsdorf collected his second free pass of the afternoon. Junior
Will Kelley advanced each runner 90ft closer with sacrifice bunt, but a failed safety squeeze resulted in a double play to end the Ursinus threat. On the mound, Bass continued to breeze through the Ramapo lineup in the seventh inning. After a two-out single, the right-handed retired the side with a groundout to end the frame.
In the eighth inning, the Roadrunners lineup loaded the bases with just one out forcing a Ursinus pitching change. Junior
Jared Minnichbach relieved Bass on the mound and recorded the second out with a strikeout swinging. Ramapo received a walk to cut their deficit to one and tallied a two-out two RBI single to capture a 5-4 lead. Minnichbach halted the Ramapo rally with a fly out to end the frame. The Bears battled back in the eighth inning loading the bases behind a double from Richter and back-to-back free passes from Cantor and Runsdorf. The Bears rally ended as a runner's interference was called at second base while the Roadrunners were trying to turn a double play, preventing the tying run to score.
During the Bears final inning at the plate, Ursinus was able to get the tying run on first base but a fly out and strikeout ended the contest. Cantor led the Bears at the plate finishing 3-for-3 while Balos added two base knocks and Diaz recorded two RBIs. Ramapo's Troy Karaty earned the win in relief pitching a scoreless seventh inning while Will Paoli earned his third save of the season closing out the Bears in the ninth. Bass scattered seven hits, and four earned runs over 7.1 innings while recording 13 of his 22 outs via a groundball.
The Bears return to action on Saturday as they open Centennial Conference action with a double header against Gettysburg College.
