Baseball Upended against DeSales

GARNET VALLEY, Pa. – Leading 7-3 in the middle innings, eight unanswered runs from DeSales proved to be the difference as the Ursinus College baseball team fell to the Bulldogs 11-7 on Monday evening.

With the loss, the Bears fell to 11-17 on the season meanwhile the Bulldogs improved to 13-14 overall. Ursinus wraps up their non-conference schedule and will close out the season with 12 straight games against Centennial Conference opponents.

The Bulldogs jumped on the board first in their opening frame at the plate, scoring three runs off three hits and two Bears defensive errors. Starting pitcher, junior Jared Minnichbach stranded two runners on base after receiving a groundball out to end the frame.

In the top of the second inning, first-year designated hitter Shane Beaver led off with a single to left field and hustled into second after a bobble from the Bulldogs left fielder. Ursinus would load the bases as sophomore Jakob Cantor walked and classmate Andrew Richter was hit-by-a-pitch. After a strikeout, senior Solomon Griffith drove in two runs with a base hit up the middle to cut the Bears deficit to one. The Bears rally ended during the next at-bat as a wild-pitch led to a runner getting nabbed at the plate and DeSales still led 3-2.

First-year Max Shilstone relived Minnichbach on the mound in the bottom of the second and after allowing a one-out double, he recorded a punch out and a defensive assist to escape the inning. The defensive assist came when sophomore Dylan Runsdorf threw a runner out trying to swipe third base. In the third inning, junior Will Kelley led off with a single and later advanced into scoring position, but a foul pop out and a strikeout ended the Bears chance to tie the game. During the Bulldogs chance at the plate, Shilstone settled in and retired the DeSales lineup in order.

The Bears offense came alive in the fourth inning retaking a 7-3 lead after scoring five runs behind six hits and one defensive error. Ursinus opened the frame with five straight singles coming from Tom Snipes, Cantor, Richter, Runsdorf, and Griffith to take a 5-3 advantage. With two runners on, Kelley recorded a sac fly and an RBI scoring Runsdorf from third and the Bears scored their final run after senior Nick Diaz reached on an error. In the bottom half of the frame, DeSales cut into their deficit with a solo home run from Colin Trembley to trim the Bears lead to 7-4. On the mound, Shilstone locked in and recorded two punch outs to get through his third inning of work.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut their deficit to one, behind a one-out two RBI single from Shane Anhalt. After a walk put two runners on base, Shilstone escaped the jam by recording a foul pop out and a strikeout to end the frame. He finished his day after four innings of work allowing three earned runs and five hits while fanning five batters.

In the sixth inning, Griffith reached first to open the frame via a hit by pitch but would later be stranded at third as a flyout to right field ended the frame. In the bottom half of the frame, the Bulldogs regained an 8-7 lead after scoring two runs on three free passes. DeSales capitalized off two walks, four stolen bases, and a Bears defensive error to retake the lead. The Bulldogs offense came alive in the seventh inning scoring three insurance runs to extend their lead to 11-7. In the eighth inning, Ursinus put their first two men abroad via walks, but a double play and a groundout ended the Bears rally.

Sophomore outfielder Peter Balos added a base hit in the ninth, but the Bears could not overcome the deficit and fell to DeSales 11-7. At the plate, Griffith led the way finishing 2-for-3 with a career-high four RBIs while Balos, Snipes, and Cantor each collected two base hits. First-year Justin Simone shined on the mound pitching a scoreless eighth inning, his third clean appearance of the season.

The Bears return to action tomorrow as they host Franklin & Marshall from Thomas Field at 3:30pm.
