COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team dropped a pair of contests to Washington College on Sunday Afternoon in their Centennial Conference opening series.
Game 1: Washington College 7, Ursinus 5
After a scoreless first inning, the Shorewomen used a five-run top of the second inning with three runs coming from a double to right center field. The Bears got a run back in the bottom of the second to make it 5-1 when junior
Madison Wilson singled in senior
Allyson Meakim from third, who led off the inning with a single. Washington College extended their lead out to 7-1 after getting runs in both the fourth and fifth innings with two outs. Ursinus made a charge at the Shorewomen with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead down to 7-4. After back-to-back singles led off the inning, sophomore
Stephanie Wichman drove both runners in with a double to right center. A third run came around to score two batters later when junior
Sarah DiLello squeezed in senior
Anna Mefford from third after she came into pinch run for Wichman. The Bears loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh and made it a two run game when junior
Sara Sullivan lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. Unfortunately for the Bears, a groundout to the pitcher ended the game. Wichman went 2-of-3 in game one with a pair of RBI's.
Game 2: Washington College 3, Ursinus 0
The Shorewomen struck again early in the top of the first behind three singles in the first four at-bats. In the bottom of the second, Meakim tripled to the right field corner to lead off the inning and DiLello walked before stealing a base to set the Bears up in business with no outs. However, a sharp groundout to the pitcher plus a double play ended the best Ursinus threat of the contest. The Shoreowmen added runs in the fourth and sixth innings and kept the Bears off the board for the remainder of the contest. Ursinus had runners on base in each inning of the contest and four of which advanced at least one into scoring position.
The Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 4th as they will travel to face Franklin & Marshall for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
