No.6 Gettysburg Defeats Women's Lacrosse in CC Action

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Behind a big first quarter run, the Ursinus College women's lacrosse was unable to overcome an early deficit falling to No. 8 Gettysburg College 20-5 on Saturday afternoon.

The Bullets jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, before junior Mary Michaud found senior Emma Wood for the Bears first goal at the 1:17-mark. Michaud made a move along the right side before hitting the trailing Wood and after a beautiful spin move, her shot soared past the Bullets netminder. During the second quarter, senior goalkeeper Alexa Machado was credited with two saves, while senior defender Julie Cherneskie tallied two forced turnovers. Gettysburg ended the period on a 4-0 run and led 13-2 at halftime.

Gettysburg collected the first two goals of the second half, before the Bears halted the run with a goal from junior Gabrielle Liott. The Bullets increased their lead to 14 at the end of the third period with back-to-back goals from Julie Breedveld and Jordan Basso. After three straight goals to open the final stanza, the Bears responded with the final two goals of the contest from Michaud and Liott. With her second goal of the game, Michaud has scored in 14 straight games, including nine games with two or more goals.

In net, senior Alexa Machado and first-year Camille Hubbs each split time over the 60 minutes of game action with both netminders finishing with six saves. Gettysburg's Gill Cortese earned the victory in net recording six saves of 45 minutes of action. The Bullets held a 35-17 advantage in shots while converting on all 18 of their clear attempts and holding the Bears to a clear percentage of 68.4% (13-of-19). Gettysburg held a 16-11 advantage in draw controls while tallying an 15-10 edge in ground balls.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Allentown, Pennsylvania for a Centennial Conference matchup with Muhlenberg College.
