Dominant Pitching Leads Softball to Sweep of Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team continued its strong Centennial Conference run by sweeping Haverford on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears won game one 8-0 before edging the Fords for a game two win, 2-1.

With the sweep, the Bears improved to 26-11 overall and 11-2 in Centennial Conference play. Ursinus has now won 11-straight conference games after being swept by Washington College on April 2nd and have now swept five-straight conference doubleheaders to maintain its grip on first place in the league. Meanwhile, the Fords wrapped up their season with a 17-20-1 overall record and 5-10-1 mark in conference play.

GAME 1: Ursinus 8, Haverford 0
Neither team reached base by a hit until the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Samantha Mallen singled to lead off the frame. Mallen proceeded to steal second base and junior Madison Wilson knocked her in with a single to make it 1-0. A walk and fielding error loaded the bases with no outs and senior Amanda Panati drove in the Bears second run by a sacrifice fly. A failed pick off attempt on a throw to first base from the Ford catcher brought in a third run to make it a 3-0 game. First-year Christa Andrusiewicz carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth with two outs and snuffed out a bunt attempt to end the inning after allowing her first hit. First-year Kayla Carr then began a big seventh inning for the Bears with an opposite field home run to make it 4-0. The Bears loaded the bases with no outs and brought in two more runs via sacrifice flies from Wilson and sophomore Stephanie Wichman. Senior Allyson Meakim singled before stealing second base which set up Panati and junior Sara Sullivan to singled in two more runs, capping the win at 8-0.

GAME 2: Ursinus 2, Haverford 1
For the second-straight game, the Bears opened the scoring in the top of the fourth as Wichman crushed a home run to left field. Wichman turned back to the circle and worked around a leadoff double and runner on third base with one out to keep the game scoreless into the 6th. Wilson was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth inning and came around to score when Panati roped a double to left center to make it 2-0. The Fords scored their first and only run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh off a leadoff home run which cut the Bears lead down to 2-1. First-year pitcher Riley Coneeny bounced back and retired three of the next four batters to lock up the sweep for the Bears.

Pitching ruled the day for the Bears as Andrusiewicz, Wichman, and Coneeny combined to allow just one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts and zero walks. Andrusiewicz allowed just three hits while striking out three to earn her 12th win of the season that currently ranks second in the Centennial. Wichman went the first five innings of game two and allowed no runs on two hits with two strikeouts, while Coneeny pitched the final two innings to earn her second save of the season. From the plate, Panati and Wilson each recorded two RBIs in the contest while Carr went 2-for-3 and her home run. Wichman and Panati each totaled two hits in game two and one RBI apiece.
