Volleyball Takes Down Rutgers-Camden in Straight-Sets

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's Volleyball team earned a hard-fought straight-set win (25-23, 25-22, 25-19) over Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday night at Helfferich Hall in non-conference action.

With the win, the Bears improved to 4-4 overall as they earned their third-straight win. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Raptors of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) fell to 2-5.

Junior Caroline Sherman led the Bears with a game-high 14 kills and a .242 hitting percentage. Sherman has recorded double-digit kills in seven of the Bears eight games this season while adding eight digs. Sophomore Mel Eglinton posted 13 kills, seven digs, and two assists as she combined with Sherman for 27 of the Ursinus 40 kills. First-year Alexa Mazzeo tallied a team-high 10 digs and junior Rachel Bernard paced the Bears offense with 16 assists while adding four kills. Sophomore Erin Dychdala added 15 assists and senior Gabby McGinn tallied a game-high five aces.

Ursinus fended off an early advantage by the Scarlet Raptors by winning nine of the next 11 points after trailing 3-1 to go up 10-5 in the first set. Rutgers-Camden countered by taking eight of the next nine points, including seven-straight, to go up 13-11. The Scarlet Raptors maintained their advantage and led 18-15 before the Bears took six of the next seven points and took a 21-19 lead. Rutgers-Camden pulled within one point at 22-21 and Ursinus put themselves at set point by winning the next two to go up 24-21. The Scarlet Raptors used a kill and an ace to get within one point again but a kill from Eglinton off a lengthy rally gave the set to the Bears.

The Bears started strong in the second set with three kills and one ace to take an early 4-0 lead and eventually extended their advantage out to 12-5. Ursinus took their largest lead of the set at 14-6 before the Scarlet Raptors made a run and got within four points at 15-11 behind taking five of six points. The Bears continued to hit well in the second set and stretched their lead back out to as many as seven points at 22-15. Rutgers-Camden made one last charge by winning five of the next six points after trailing 23-17, but Eglinton once again slammed the door shut on the rally with a kill and put Ursinus up 2-0 in the match.

After the Bears won the first point of the third set, the Scarlet Raptors won seven of the next nine points to go up 7-3 early in the third set. Ursinus countered with the same run and took a 10-9 lead after a kill from first-year Daejah Bazemore. The Bears also had an answer for three-straight Rutgers-Camden points by taking five of the next six to go up 15-13. Rutgers-Camden won the next two points and tied the third set at 15 before the Bears went on the decisive run of the match by taking seven of the next nine points and went up 22-17. This time, there was no late rally by the Scarlet Raptors as the Bears closed out the match by winning three of the next five points, capped yet again by a kill from Eglinton.

Erica Nebrich led the Scarlet Raptors with both eight kills and 16 digs and Kaliayh Moss recorded six kills and a .556 hitting percentage.

The Bears return to action on Friday, September 15th as they will open play in the two-day Neumann Invitational with Widener at 4:00 p.m.
