COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior midfielder
Joshua Coster's goal in the 24
th minute lifted the Ursinus College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rosemont College on Wednesday evening from Patterson Field.
With the victory Ursinus stays unbeaten on the season and improves to 4-0 as they open Centennial Conference action on Saturday, meanwhile the Ravens fell to 1-4 overall.
The contest opened as a back-and-forth battle in the midfield before each team were awarded corner kick opportunities during the first six minutes. Ursinus put a trio of shots on net over the next five minutes, but each were denied by the Ravens defense and goalkeeper Gunner Hoffman to keep the contest scoreless. During the 16

Tommy Mollis and
Kai Haynes combined for four shots on goal as Hoffman increased his save total to six midways through the opening frame. After subbing into the game during the 22
nd minute, Coster put Ursinus ahead 1-0 with his first collegiate goal at the 24:26-mark. After receiving a pass down the near sideline from junior
Alexander Woll, Coster made a single touch before launching a shot over the head of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give Ursinus an early lead. Ursinus added four more shots over the remaining 20 minutes of the first half but were unable to add an insurance goal and led by one heading into the second half.
Just two minutes into the second half Ursinus nearly added a second goal as Haynes fired a shot from outside the box, but his opportunity hit off the crossbar to keep the lead at one. During the 78th minute, first-year
Simon Muther found the crosswork nealy adding to the Bears advantage. Rosemont picked up the offense throughout the second half earning five shots including two on goal, but the Bears defense and first-year goalkeeper
Josiah Moore denied each of the opportunities to give Ursinus the 1-0 shutout victory.
Senior
Kirk Ransome earned the victory in net recording one save during the first half, while Moore made his second appearance of the season collecting two saves over the final 45 minutes. For the Ravens Gunner Hoffman was dealt the loss but was credited with nine saves during the contest. Ursinus outshot the Ravens 19-8 including a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal, while the Bears were awarded 11 corner kick opportunities compared to just eight for Rosemont.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they travel to McDaniel College for a Centennial Conference matchup starting at noon.
