Football Uses All-Around Effort to Down Rowan, 44-21

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Ursinus football team had it all working tonight as they earned a convincing 44-21 win over Rowan on the road Saturday evening in non-conference action.

With the win, the Bears improved to 3-0 overall for the first time since the 2018 season. Meanwhile, the Profs of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) fell to 1-2 overall.

Junior quarterback Jalen Bradford blitzed his one-week old career-high in passing yards as he posted 349 yards through the air on 19-of-25 passing with three touchdowns and one interception. Bradford has thrown three touchdown passes in all three games this season while adding 45 yards on the ground off eight carries. Junior Cameron Dennis led the Bears with a career-high 98 receiving yards off three catches that was powered by a 48-yard touchdown reception. Sophomore Cody House caught six passes for 56 yards and scored another touchdown to bring his total to five in three games. First-year Ryder Zulkowski impressed by catching two passes for 53 yards as nine Bears recorded at least one reception.

Junior Tony Holden led a dominant rushing attack for the Bears that rushed for 213 yards as a team with a game-high 102 yards off 21 carries. Holden also caught two passes for 48 yards and one touchdown. Senior fullback Dawson Fresses once again provided a nice compliment to Holden as he rushed for 56 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns.

After each team traded three-and-outs on their respective opening drives, the Bears powered their way through the Profs defense with seven-straight runs that ended in a two-yard score from Fresses to put Ursinus up 7-0 at the 8:38 mark of the first quarter. Ursinus fumbled on its next drive at their own 49-yard line, but the Bears defense stood up to task by limiting Rowan to just two yards on its next drive to force a punt.

Rowan had its first drive of the night go into Ursinus territory in the early portion of the second quarter only to have it ended on downs at the Bears 28-yard line. The Bears wasted little time taking advantage of the big stop when Bradford found Dennis wide open down the left sideline for a 48-yard touchdown to extend the Ursinus lead to 14-0 at the 6:43-mark of the second quarter. Rowan quarterback Noah Brunatti fumbled while scrambling on the second play of the ensuing Profs drive that set the Bears with great field position after sophomore Sean Spinosa recovered the fumble. Unfortunately for the Bears, they could not take advantage of the turnover as they turned it over on downs. Rowan had a drive thwarted by a crazy sequence that saw Brunatti collide with an official and then into senior Ryan Bodolus which caused a fumble that set the Profs back 18 yards. Ursinus got the ball back and moved towards midfield until Bradford was intercepted for a touchdown which put Rowan back in the game at 14-7 with just 1:10 left in the first half. However, Bradford quickly shook off the interception and started the next drive with a 30-yard scramble to midfield. Bradford sliced through the Profs defense and responded with a two-yard toss to House with 16 seconds left in the first half to send the Bears into halftime up 21-7.

The Bears forced a three-and-out on the Profs first drive of the second half and was seemingly poised to extend their lead until a Bradford fumble in Rowan territory ended the drive. Ursinus staved off the turnover by forcing another three-and-out which led to a Bears drive that ended with sophomore kicker Jordan Carr making a 30-yard field goal to make it a 24-7 game. Ursinus forced another three-and-out and methodically marched down the field in a drive that went into the fourth quarter. Bradford found Holden down the right sideline for a 29-yard touchdown and extended the Bears lead to 30-7 at the 12:57-mark of the fourth quarter. The Bears defense got in on the scoring on the next Profs drive when senior linebacker Brett Gross scooped up a fumble forced by junior Marc Clayton for a 39-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 37-7. Rowan ended the Bears 23-unaswered points with a 65-yard touchdown run that was only answered by another touchdown by Fresses to make it 44-14. Dennis made a 43-yard acrobatic catch at the two-yard line to set up the Bears final touchdown of the night.

Gross matched his career-high with 14 tackles (four solo) with 1.0 TFL and his fumble return for a touchdown. Spinosa added six tackles (two solo), 0.5 TFL, and a fumble recovery while Clayton tallied five tackles (three solo), 2.0 TFL, one sack and his forced fumble. Bodolus finished with four tackles (three solo), 2.5 TFL, a sack, and one forced fumble. He now stands three sacks of the Bears all-time sack record.

Ursinus churned out 562 yards of total offense compared to the Profs at 298 behind a balanced attack.

The Bears have a week off before returning to action on Friday, September 29th as they will host No. 25 Muhlenberg at 7:00 p.m.
