Men's Tennis Splits Fall Matches with Alvernia and Goucher

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team split a pair of matches in their fall opener on Saturday at the Ace Bailey Tennis Courts. The Bears dominated Alvernia 9-0 before dropping hard-fought 7-2 match to Goucher.
 

With the split, the Bears will go 1-1 into the spring matches. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves fell to 0-2 and the Gophers will start at 1-0.
 
Ursinus 9, Alvernia 0
 
Ursinus swept the doubles matches to go up 3-0 headed into singles play. A pair of first-years in Noah Dichter and Teddy Snyder won 8-0 over Alec Verhagen and Alexandros Vaziri in their collegiate debuts at No. 3 doubles. Senior Lars Jespersen and first-year Deniz Finkel downed Thomas Figurelli and Luke Brisbois at the No. 2 spot 8-2 before seniors Darby Rogers and Ethan Yu finished things off in doubles by defeating Lucas Berger and Jayden Lewis 8-1 at the No. 1 spot.
 
 
The Bears continued to pull away as sophomore Andrei Bogdan took down Figurelli 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and junior Hunter Murray locked up the match by sweeping Brisbois 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. Snyder completed a sweep of his own over Berger 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Finkel topped Lewis 6-0, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. Dichter swept Verhagen 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot while senior Storm Snape bested Vaziri 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to finish the match.
 
 
Goucher 7, Ursinus 2
 
Goucher gained the upper hand in doubles by taking two of the three matches. Snyder and Dichter suffered an 8-2 setback to U. Laguardia Alvarez and Tadeo Asprella at No. 3 doubles, but Yu and Rogers evened up the match by winning 8-5 Calis Nguyen and Gabe Naftoly at the No. 1 spot. Jespersen and Finkel were edged in a thriller 8-7 (7-4) by Benedikt Rummel and Angel Cerpa at No. 2 doubles.
 
A wild set of singles action that featured five tiebreakers started with Snyder taking down Cerpa 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 4 singles. Yu fell 6-3, 3-6, (10-4) to Asprella at the No. 2 spot and Rogers suffered a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 11-13 setback in a marathon to Naftoly in No. 3 singles. Jespersen dropped a 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 3-10 match at No. 1 singles to Laguardia Alvarez which clinched the match for the Gophers. Finkel was downed 6-1, 3-6, 8-10 by Nguyen at the No. 5 spot and Bogdan lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-10 at No. 6 singles to King.
 
 
The Bears will have a week off before wrapping up the fall at the ITA Individual Championships at Mary Washington starting on Friday, September 29th at 8:00 a.m.
