COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's tennis team opened their fall season with a doubleheader sweep of Alvernia (7-2) and Goucher (6-3) on Saturday at the Ace Bailey Tennis Courts.
With the sweep, the Bears will head into the spring at 2-0 behind the two match wins. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves fell to 0-2 and the Gophers at 0-1.
Ursinus 7, Alvernia 2
Ursinus gained the upper hand in doubles play by winning two of the three matches. A pair of first-years in
Caroline Daly and
Morgan Coupe won in their collegiate debuts as they defeated the duo of Sarah Mies and Megan Wells at No. 3 doubles. Junior
Allie Armour and sophomore
Bella Vassalluzzo earned an 8-3 triumph over Jillian Laughman and Monica Nguyen at the No. 2 spot for the second Bears doubles win. Seniors
Claire Burke and
Avery Samer dropped a tough 8-5 match to Leah Bouchard and Lily Summerson at No. 1 doubles.
The Bears closed out the win over Alvernia by winning five of the six singles matches. Burke downed Laughman 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot before Armour fell 3-6, 4-6 to Bouchard at No. 1 singles. Sophomore
Fiona Finnerty earned a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, (10-6) win over Nguyen at the No. 4 position and Samer locked up the match by edging Summerson 6-7 (2-0), 7-5, 11-9 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore
Kate Rubinkam defeated Mies 6-2, 6-0 in her Ursinus debut at the No. 5 spot while Daly capped things off with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Daly at No. 6 singles.
Ursinus 6, Goucher 3
The Bears once again won two of the three doubles matches that gave them the early lead against the Gophers. Daly and Coupe defeated Rachel Haupt and Aaliyah Ybarra at the No. 3 spot before Armour and Vassalluzzo added their second doubles win of the day behind an 8-6 win over Jessica Townes and Lucy Ingraham. Samer and Burke were edged 8-6 by Natalia Navarro and Melin Sigen at the No. 1 spot.
Armour got singles play off with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Navarro at No. 1 singles and Burke added to the Bears lead by taking down Sigen 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. Finnerty dropped a 3-6, 3-6 match to Townes at the No. 4 spot while Samer fell 2-6, 5-7 to Haupt at No. 3 singles. Rubinkam clinched the win for the Bears by taking down Ingraham 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles before Daly ended the day by besting Ybarra 6-2, 6-4.
The Bears return to action next weekend as they will compete in the ITA Individual Championships at Mary Washington starting on Saturday, September 23rd at 8:00 a.m.
