Volleyball Impresses in Straight-Set Sweep of Stockton

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's Volleyball team never trailed during any set and earned a resounding straight-set sweep of Stockton (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) on Thursday night in non-conference action at Helfferich Hall.
 
 
With the win, the Bears improved to 7-5 overall and have now won six of their last seven matches. Meanwhile, the Ospreys of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) fell to 7-6 overall.
 
 
Junior Caroline Sherman picked right up where she left off from the Neumann Tournament and recorded double-digit kills for 11th time in 12 games with a match-high 15 while hitting a strong .387 for the match. Senior Haley Spotts tallied seven kills on 12 attacks to total a .583 hitting percentage and posted two blocks. Sophomore Mel Eglinton added seven kills and eight digs while first-year Daejah Bazemore had an efficient six kills on 14 attacks. Junior Rachel Bernard paced the Bears offense with a game-high 23 assists and sophomore Erin Dychdala posted a double-double of 13 assists plus a team-high 11 digs.
 
 
Ursinus took the early advantage in the first set at 3-1 and Sherman powered the Bears with four-straight kills to put them up 7-3. The Ospreys won three of the next four points to pull within two points at 8-6 before the Bears responded by taking five of the next six points to go up 13-7. Stockton won four of the next five points to get within 14-11 and eventually 17-15 following three-straight points. The Bears responded to the run by taking three of the next four points and went up 21-16 and put themselves in a good position by extending the advantage to 23-18. Stockton made things interesting by winning four of the next five points, but Sherman put an end to the rally with a set-winning kill.
 
 
 
The Bears started fast in the second set as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead behind a mix of kills and Osprey errors. Stockton closed within two points at 7-5 but the Bears had an answer the whole night for any run the Ospreys had. Ursinus stretched their lead back out to 11-8 before winning four of the next five points to go up 15-9. Back-to-back kills from Bazemore gave the Bears their largest lead of the set at 19-12 until the Ospreys took one last run by cutting it down to 22-18. Ursinus won the next two points and staved off three-straight points by Stockton to win the second set after another clinching kill from Sherman. Ursinus hit a sizzling .429 as a team in the second set.
 

Ursinus once again gained the early advantage in the third set as they went up 4-1 before working their way up to a 6-3 lead. Stockton used back-to-back points to make it a 6-5 game until Ursinus countered by taking four of the next five points to go up 10-6. The Ospreys did not ever go away in the third set, but they were only able to get within two points the rest of the way. Ursinus answered any threat Stockton had which included the decisive run in the third set. Leading 16-14, the Bears won eight of the next 10 points to go up 24-17, putting themselves at match point. Stockton stayed alive by winning the next four points until Bazemore delivered the final knockout with a kill.
 
 
Kate Louer and Nicole Palmer led the Ospreys with eight kills apiece while Regan Mendick paced the Stockton offense with 13 assists.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Saturday, September 23rd as they will host Penn State Behrend and William Paterson for a tri-match. Ursinus opens with Behrend at 12:00 p.m. before taking on William Paterson at 4:00 p.m.
