COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind an all-around performance, the Ursinus College women's soccer team defeated Stevenson University 2-0, on a warm sunny afternoon from Patterson Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory the Bears improved to 2-0 on the season, meanwhile the Mustangs of the Middle Atlantic Conference fell to 0-1-1 overall.
Ursinus earned the first two scoring chances of the contests through the first five minutes of action as seniors
Alex Chalmers and
Ciara Rago each had their shots saved by the Stevenson netminder. At the 16:33-mark of the first half on a breakaway, Rago nearly put the Bears on the board but a diving stop by Stevenson's Courtney Wysokowski kept the game scoreless. The Mustangs answered with back-to-back shots in the 20
th minute, but the Bears defense and senior goalkeeper
Maddie Nau stuffed both scoring opportunities. Ursinus landed a corner kick opportunity in the 27
th minute and landed the go-ahead goal after senior
Izzy Allocco found sophomore
Kalli Roskos for her first goal of the 2023 season. Allocco sent a high cross into the box and after missing the first wave of leaping defenders, the ball found the right foot of Roskos to give Ursinus a 1-0 advantage.
Ten minutes later at the 37:22-mark, Ursinus doubled their lead when junior
Kayla Harvey found classmate
Grace Senese to give the Bears a two-goal advantage. On the breakaway, Roskos fed Harvey down the far sideline with a through ball and Harvey returned the favor sending a pass into the box finding Senese from 15-yards out for her first goal of the season. Each defense stood tall over the remaining seven minutes of the first half as Ursinus took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Mustangs responded in the second half earning the first two scoring chances but were denied on each opportunity as Nau was credited with two saves. Much of the second half consisted of a battle in the midfield as neither team created many scoring chances until a breakaway for Stevenson during the 82
nd minute. After a Bears corner kick led to a clear from Stevenson, a Mustang forward created some space outside the box but a sliding tackle from first-year defender
Maddie Jolie shutdown the Stevenson scoring opportunity. Each team traded shots over the final two minutes with Ursinus earning their second consecutive shutout victory, 2-0.
The Bears finished with a 15-13 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 edge in the first half, while Ursinus recorded eight corner kicks compared to just three for the Mustangs. Nau earned her second consecutive shutout victory in goal collecting eight saves, while Stevenson's Courtney Wysokowski suffered the loss behind a total of five saves.
The Bears will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Glenside, Pennsylvania for a non-conference matchup against Arcadia University at 7 p.m.
