Defense Leads Women's Basketball Past Bryn Mawr


COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Behind an all-around team effort, the Ursinus College women's basketball team collected a 55-27 Centennial Conference victory over Bryn Mawr College on the road Wednesday evening. 


With the victory, Ursinus improves to 9-6 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Owls fall to 2-13 on the season and 0-11 in conference action. 


Junior forward Chinwe Irondi paced the Bears offense with a game-high 16 points and four assists, while senior Natalie Mehl added 12 points and eight rebounds. On the defensive side, sophomore Ava Possenti and junior Charlotte DiLello each tallied four steals a piece. 


Ursinus jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage on their first possession behind Mehl assisting on a mid-range jump shot by Irondi at the 9:47-mark. After a basket from the Owls, Mehl collected her second steal of the game before converting on a fast-break layup to give Ursinus a 4-2 lead with 7:53 remaining in the quarter. The Bears would hold Bryn Mawr scoreless for the remainder of the opening period while a 11-0 run increased the Ursinus lead to 15-2 at the end of the opening quarter. During the Bears' run, Irondi scored six consecutive points before Smith and Mehl combined for the final three points of the quarter. 


Mehl started to heat up during the opening minutes of the second stanza scoring seven consecutive points for the Bears to increase their lead to 22-2 at the 6:39-mark of the period. She opened the Bears' run with a three-pointer before connecting on a jump shot and a layup leading to an Owls timeout. After an Ursinus basket, Bryn Mawr scored five straight points to cut into the Bears' lead and make the score 24-7 with 4:32 remaining in the opening half. Ursinus held the opposition scoreless for the remainder of the period, while Possenti connected on a three-pointer and baskets from Irondi and DiLello stretched the Bears lead to 33-7 at the halftime break. 


The Bears' defense continued to play well during the opening minutes of the third stanza, holding the opposition scoreless for the first five minutes of play. Meanwhile, five straight points from sophomore Madison Smith and a basket from first-year Colleen Blackman extended the Bears' lead to 40-7 with 6:08 remaining in the quarter. The Owls responded with a 7-0 run to close out the third quarter, but Ursinus held a 40-14 advantage at the end of the period. Each team traded baskets through the fourth quarter, but the Bears outscored the Owls 15-13 in the period en route to the 55-27 victory. 


The Bears shot 33.9% (21-of-62) from the field, 12.5% (2-of-16) from three-point range, and 64.7% (11-of-17) from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Bears defense held the Owls to shoot 22.2% (12-of-54) from the field, 12.5% from deep, and 25% (2-of-8) from the free-throw line. Bryn Mawr's Jessica Smith recorded a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds behind shooting 7-of-17 from the field. The Bears held a 46-42 advantage in rebounds, while out scoring the Owls 30-14 in the paint, and holding a 21-10 edge in points off turnovers. 


The Bears return to action on Saturday, January 20th as they host McDaniel College for a Centennial Conference matchup inside Helfferich Hall at 3 p.m.
