Men's Basketball Surges Past Haverford on the Road, 77-66

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and strong second half to take down Haverford 77-66 on the road on Thursday night in Centennial Conference action.
 
 
With the win, the Bears leveled their overall record to 9-9 while improving to 5-6 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Fords fell to 4-14 overall and 1-10 in conference play.
 
 
Five Bears scored in double figures led by senior Trevor Wall with a team-high 17 points along with a game-high five assists. Junior Jaiden Jakubowski tallied 12 points behind a near-perfect 6-of-7 from the field while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds plus four steals. His classmate Marlin Wise matched him with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and tallied four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sophomore Nick Nocito and senior Beau Everett tallied 10 points apiece in the win.
 
 
The Bears quickly made their first three shot attempts to take an early 6-0 advantage and grew their lead out to 14-7 at the 14:52-mark. Ursinus took a lead by as much as 11 points in the first half after Wise knocked down a three-pointer at the 10:17-mark to make it a 26-15 game. However, the Fords slowly worked their way back into the game as the remainder of the first half went along and pulled within five points at 30-25 at the 5:06-mark. The Fords surged ahead of the Bears into halftime by closing the first half on an 11-3 run in a span of 4:12.
 
 
Haverford kept their momentum going to start the second half as they opened with a 5-2 burst to take their largest lead of the game at 41-36. They matched that advantage following a three-pointer to make it 44-38 at the 15:35-mark of the second half before the Bears took control of the game with a 20-3 run to go up 60-47. Ursinus held the Fords to just one field goal during a span of 7:36 while going 10-of-12 from the field in that same stretch. The Bears did not allow their lead to fall into single digits for the remainder of the contest behind solid defense and a strong stretch of free throw shooting.
 
 
Ursinus shot 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the field and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from three-point range. The Bears went 16-of-25 (64%) from the free throw line after bouncing back in the second half by going 15-of-21. Ursinus held a 34-26 rebounding advantage and forced 15 Ford turnovers. Meanwhile, the Fords shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field and 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from deep. The Fords shot a solid 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free throw line and got a game-high 24 points from Gabriel Franklin.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Saturday, January 27th as they will host No. 24 Johns Hopkins at 3:00 p.m.
