COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College Volleyball team outlasted Washington College 3-1 (25-16, 15-25, 25-23, 25-21) in a highly-competitive Centennial Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Helfferich Hall.
With the win, the Bears improved to 11-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play behind back-to-back wins. Meanwhile, the Shorewomen fall to 11-7 overall and 1-3 in Centennial action.
Three Bears tallied 11 kills to lead the team against the Shorewomen. Junior
Reena Robinson was one of the trio with 11 kills and tallied a .370 hitting percentage. Senior
Caroline Sherman matched behind a .263 hitting percentage plus five digs and two assists while junior
Mel Eglinton hit .269 with her 11 kills. Sophomore
Alonna McCummings added eight kills off a .353 hitting percentage and senior
Emma Illovsky registered a season-high 22 kills. Senior
Rachel Bernard paced the offense with 24 assists and junior
Erin Dychdala added 16 assists.
Washington College started fast in the first set with a 6-1 advantage and worked its lead out to 10-5 following a kill. The Bears stormed back by winning eight of the next 10 points to take its first lead of the set at 13-12. After the Shorewomen tied the set up at 13, Ursinus took complete control by winning 11 of the next 12 points to reach set point and junior
Lexi Couch closed it out with a kill.
It was once again the Shorewomen that gained the early advantage in the second set, but this time they never trailed. Washington College went up 6-2 early and eventually extended its lead to 12-6. The Shorewomen continued to pull away from the Bears by winning six of the next seven points following two Ursinus points, leaving them up 18-9. Ursinus was only able to get within seven points of the Shorewomen in the second set which left the match level at one.
Much like the first two sets, the Shorewomen gained the early lead with a quick start at 6-3 before the Bears ran off five straight points to go up 8-6. Washington College responded by taking five of the next six points to go up 11-9, but the Bears countered by taking seven of the next nine points to take a 16-13 lead and forced a timeout. Three straight points from the Shorewomen made it 16-all and they eventually went up two points at 21-19. However, three straight attack errors put Ursinus in front at 22-21. The teams traded points to leave the set at 23 before kills from McCummings and Couch gave the Bears a 2-1 lead in the match.
Ursinus found themselves down early in the fourth set at 7-3 and eventually 10-5 following three straight Shorewomen points. Ursinus began to claw away by cutting the deficit to 12-8 and won four straight points that tied the set at 12. The teams went back and forth until the Bears surged ahead by winning five of six points, when trailing 16-15, to go up 20-17 to force a timeout. Ursinus staved off Shorewomen points and went up 23-19 following a thunderous kill from Sherman which made Washington College use its last timeout. The Shorewomen stayed alive with back-to-back points until McCummings slammed the door with back-to-back kills.
Lindsay Saddic led the Shorewomen and game with 14 kills while Collette Franck posted 13 kills. Allison McKechnie paced the Washington offense with a game-high 25 assists.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, October 23rd as they will travel to face Franklin & Marshall at 7:00 p.m.
