Football Drops Contest to No. 20/23 Johns Hopkins

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus football team suffered a 16-7 setback to No. 20/23 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

Senior running back Tony Holden earned the Kenneth E. Walker Trophy for the second straight season, the award handed out to the most outstanding Ursinus player in their homecoming contest. Holden rushed for 145 yards on 20 carries and scored the Bears lone touchdown.

Senior quarterback Jalen Bradford passed for 291 yards on 19-of-43 passing and classmate wide receiver Justin Collier led all receivers with seven catches for 98 yards.

Ursinus started with the ball and gained the early 7-0 lead when Holden burst through the left side for a 46-yard touchdown run at the 12:28-mark of the first quarter. After the teams traded punts, the Bears methodically worked its way down the field towards the end of the first quarter. Ursinus was forced to settle for a 42-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter that went wide left which kept the score at 7-0.

The Blue Jays responded to the missed field goal with a 17-yard touchdown pass on 4th down that tied the game at seven with 8:58 left in the second quarter. Holden opened the Bears ensuing drive with a 32-yard run before Ursinus was turned over on downs in Johns Hopkins territory. Senior defensive end Connor Carter picked up the Bears by forcing a sack fumble that set Ursinus up at the Blue Jays 31-yard line. Unfortunately for the Bears, a field goal from 35 yards out went wide left to end the scoring threat. The Blue Jays got a fortuitous break at the end of the first half when a short punt and return set them up for a 22-yard field goal that gave them a 10-7 lead at the half.

Johns Hopkins continued momentum with a 72-yard touchdown run to open the third quarter and went up 16-7 following a blocked extra point. Ursinus looked to respond when they advanced into Blue Jays territory before being turned over on downs. The Bears forced a punt and made it all the way down to the Johns Hopkins 3-yard line before Holden fumbled the ball back to the Blue Jays.

Ursinus got a stop on 4th down inside their own 10-yard line at the 10:32-mark of the fourth quarter but were unable to take advantage. The Bears had a pair of drives enter deep into Blue Jays territory during the fourth quarter but came away with zero points after a third missed field goal and interception.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, November 2nd against McDaniel at 1:00 p.m.
