CARLISLE, Pa. – Behind two goals in the first period, the 18th-ranked Ursinus College field hockey team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over Dickinson College on Saturday afternoon from Biddle Field.
With the victory, Ursinus extended their winning streak to five games, improved to 11-4 overall, and 7-2 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Red Devils fell to 5-10 on the season and 2-6 in conference play.
Sophomores
Kirsten Johnson and
Marie Brainard paced the Bears offense with a goal apiece, while junior netminder
Adriana Palladinetti tallied her third shutout of the season behind six saves.
Johnson netted the opening score during the second minute of play to give Ursinus a quick 1-0 lead. After a Red Devils foul, the Bears quickly played a pass to Johnson on the outside and she dribbled past a defender creating a one-on-one opportunity with the Dickinson goalie. Johnson fired a shot towards the right post for her fourth goal of the season and second score in the last three contests. The Bears carried the momentum into the next few minutes of play as the Ursinus offense totaled three more shots, until Brainard extended the Bears lead to two at the 8:46-mark. Maeve Montgomery who dropped it off to Brainard, and her shot soared through the Red Devils defense for the score. Ursinus tallied a pair of shots over the remainder of the period but entered the second stanza leading 2-0. Dickinson responded in the opening three minutes of the second quarter as they collected a trio of penalty corners, but the Bears stood tall and denied each opportunity to keep their lead at two. At the 27:06-mark, Ursinus recorded six penalty corners and a total of seven shots but came away without a score and entered halftime leading by two.
Senior
Mary Lauren Franz recorded the first two shots of the second half as each scoring opportunity was saved by the Red Devils netminder. Ursinus maintained much of the possession during the period as the Bears outshot Dickinson College 14-3 over the remainder of the second half enroute to a 2-0 shutout victory. Ursinus held a commanding 30-10 lead in shots, a 17-6 edge in shots on goal, and a 15-7 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Today's victory marked as the fifth shutout of the season for the Bears defense as Ursinus has only allowed one goal over the last three contests. Dickinson's netminder Taylor Morrow suffered the loss behind 13 saves over 60 minutes of action.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, October 30th as they host No. 11 Bryn Mawr College for a 7 p.m. start from Snell Alumnae Field.
