Strong First Half Leads Women's Hoops Past Rosemont

ROSEMONT, Pa. – Behind an impressive showing on both ends of the floor, the Ursinus College women's basketball team defeated Rosemont College, 78-20, on Tuesday evening from Hirsh Community Center.
 
 
With the victory, Ursinus improved to 3-2 to start the season, while the Ravens fall to 0-4 overall. Today's victory marked as the least number of points Ursinus has allowed since defeating Bryn Mawr, 84-19, on January 29th of 2015.
 

Senior forward Chinwe Irondi paced the Bears offense scoring 16 points and collecting four blocks in just 10 minutes of action. She finished a perfect six-of-six from the field and converted on four of her five free throw attempts. Sophomore guard Colleen Blackman collected nine points shooting 60% (3-of-5) from three-point range and tied junior guard Makenna Foder with a tie for a team-high with four steals. First-year Emily McDonald added a season-best nine points, while junior guard Jaycie Miller tallied a career-best and team-high five assists.

 
Ursinus jumped out to a quick 15-0 lead during the first four minutes of playing leading to a Rosemont timeout with 5:30 remaining in the period. The Bear's run was sparked by 10 straight points from Irondi, before a Blackman three-pointer stretched the lead to 13. Irondi tallied three blocks to open the contest, Blackman, and junior Ava Possenti each were credited with steals to lead the Ursinus defense. After the timeout, Foder and senior Charlotte DiLello collected baskets, while Blackman's second triple extended the Bears lead to 22-0 with 2:52 remaining in the opening stanza. Ursinus closed out the quarter on a 9-3 run as a three-pointer from Miller ended the period with Ursinus leading 31-3.

 
First-year Delaney McCaffery, Ruth O'Keeffe, and McDonald each collected a basket to open the second quarter, while a three-pointer from McDonald increased the Ursinus advantage to 42-3 with 5:46 to play in the half. Rosemont scored five of the next seven points, before a three-pointer from sophomore Erin Glanz and a layup from junior Mel Hiotis closed out the first half with Ursinus leading 49-8.
 

The Bears opened the second half with a steal from Possenti that led to an offensive rebound and a layup from DiLello to stretch the Bears advantage to 43. Rosemont recorded a 5-2 run, but a pair of free throws and a three-pointer from Possenti put Ursinus ahead 58-13 with 4:26 to play in the period. Blackman connected on her third triple, while free throws from Hiotis and McCaffrey extended the Bears lead to 65-16 with one quarter remaining. The Ravens opened the final period with four straight points, but baskets from first-years Logan Jefferson, McCaffrey, and McDonald increased the Ursinus lead to 71-20. Ursinus held Rosemont scoreless over the remainder of the contest enroute to a 78-20 road victory.
 
 
Ursinus shot a season-best 59.3% (32-of-54) from the field and 50% (8-of-16) from three-point range, while reaching season-highs in steals (17) and blocks (6). Meanwhile, Rosemont shot just 15.2% (7-of-46) from the floor, 7.7% (1-of-13) from deep, and 41.7% (5-of-12) at the charity stripe. Ursinus led from start to finish, totaled 36 points in the paint, and capitalized off 28 Ravens turnovers turning it into 33 points.
 
 
The Bears return to action on Thursday, November 21st as they host Albright College for a 7:30 p.m. start from Helfferich Hall.
