Men's Soccer Downed by Gettysburg on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team fell behind early and could not overcome the deficit eventually falling to Gettysburg College, 5-1 on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day from Patterson Field.

The Bears celebrated eight seniors on the afternoon as Zach Matik, Cole Hutchinson, Ben Weir, Jack Schmidt, Luke Luehrs, Patrick Tormey, Alexander Woll, and Joshua Coster were recognized prior to the game for their dedication and commitment to the Ursinus College men's soccer program over the last four seasons.

Ursinus recorded the first two shots of the contest as sophomore Declan Curran and Tormey each tallied a shot, but both opportunities missed wide to keep the contest scoreless through the first 10 minutes of play. Gettysburg answered at the 16:01-mark as Josue De Leon Sabala capitalized off a defensive miscue resulting in an own goal to give the Bullets an early 1-0 lead. During the play, Sabala played a cross into the box that deflected off a Bears' defender and into the back of the cage for the goal. Ursinus responded with back-to-back shots from sophomore Mathias Stegner and junior Colin Deal, but still trailed by one midway through the half. At the 36:20-mark, Gettysburg converted on a corner kick opportunity to stretch their lead to 2-0 at the halftime break.

After the halftime adjustments, Ursinus nearly cut their deficit to one as Woll fired a shot on goal, but his opportunity deflected off the woodwork at the 52:17-mark. Shortly after, Gettysburg capitalized on the opportunity on a goal from Dylan Capazario to extend their lead to three with 26:50 remaining in the contest. The Bullets added a pair of goals later in the contest, before Luehrs connected on a penalty kick during the 87th minute resulting in the 5-1 Centennial Conference decision. On the play, Luehrs attempted a shot inside the box and his scoring chance deflected off a Bullets defender's hand resulting in the penalty kick. During Luehrs goal, he hesitated and blasted a shot towards the middle of the cage for his fifth goal of the season.

Gettysburg held a 19-14 lead in shots, a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal, and a 10-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. Matik tallied seven saves in the loss, while Gettysburg's James Anroman (four saves) and Owen Allen-Worrall (three saves) split halves in goal combining for seven saves.

The Bears close out their 2024 season with an 8-7-2 overall record and a 1-7-1 mark in Centennial Conference play.
