WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Ursinus football team saw its season end by a last-minute touchdown to King's 32-29 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Senior quarterback
Jalen Bradford went 23-of-38 for 293 yards and two touchdown passes to one interception. Senior wide receiver
Justin Collier caught nine passes for 128 yards to lead the team while classmate
Cameron Dennis hauled in both touchdown passes and caught seven passes for 107 yards.
Senior running back
Tony Holden had 59 yards on eight carries before leaving the game due to injury.
After the teams traded punts to start the game, the Bears advanced as far as the King's 10-yard line and opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal by junior
Jordan Carr that made it 3-0 with 5:17 left in the first quarter. Ursinus was able to pin the Monarchs on their own 1-yard line with a punt late in the first quarter and a tackle in the end zone forced a safety that made it 5-0 after one quarter.
The Bears took advantage of the safety and added to its lead early in the second quarter when Dennis caught a 17-yard touchdown that made it 12-0. Ursinus pinned the Monarchs at their own 4-yard line before the tide turned when King's quarterback Russell Minor-Shaw raced 94 yards to set up the first King's touchdown of the game. A fumble by the Bears on the next drive gave King's short field to go up 13-12 at the half.
Senior linebacker
Marc Clayton gave the Bears some momentum with a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown to make it a 19-13 game with 11:29 left in the third quarter. King's answered with a touchdown and missed the extra point that made it a 19-all game and Carr put the Bears ahead 22-19 with a 32-yard field goal in the final minute of the third quarter. King's took the lead back with 9:23 left in regulation with a touchdown, but had the extra point blocked that made it a 25-22 game. Ursinus staved off an interception and two big pass plays put Ursinus ahead 29-25 following a 21-yard reception by Dennis with 6:13 left in regulation. The Bears got a stop and forced a punt but were unable to get a first down on its next drive. King's moved down the field and scored a touchdown in the final minute.
Senior defensive end
Connor Carter registered a career-high 14 tackles (six solo), 2.0 TFL, and 1.5 sacks. Clayton posted 11 tackles (four solo) with his interception return for a TD while senior safety
Ryan DiVergilis made 10 tackles (six solo).
