COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus College men's basketball team led from start to finish enroute to a 93-81 victory over Goucher College on Monday evening from Helfferich Hall.
With the victory, Ursinus improves to 4-2 to start their season while the Gophers fall to 1-6 overall and sit at 0-2 in Landmark play. Senior guard
Trevor Wall led all scorers with 23 points and two assists marking his third game with 20 or more points. Junior
Mohamed Toure added his second 20-plus point outing behind 22 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Classmate
Nick Nocito tallied 18 points (7-of-9) and four assists, while first-year
Jamie Murphy rounded out the Bears in double figures with 10 points.
Toure gave Ursinus an early lead as he corralled the opening tip behind the Goucher defense and slammed it home for the first score of the contest. After a Gopher basket, Ursinus used a 7-2 run to capture a 9-4 lead with 17:23 remaining in the first half. Goucher connected on consecutive three-pointers, but the Bears recorded a pair of layups and shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line to extend their lead to 19-12 at the 14:10-mark. Goucher responded with a 13-9 run to cut their deficit to 31-25 with 10:30 remaining in the opening half. During the Gophers run, the visitors cut the Ursinus lead to just three, before a Toure' three-pointer extended the Bears advantage to six. Wall started to dominate within the paint nine of the next 10 points to give Ursinus a 41-33 lead with 4:14 to play in the half. Each team scored six points over the remainder to the half as the Bears held a 47-39 heading into the halftime break.
Both teams traded baskets to open the second half as a 11-10 Ursinus run gave the Bears a 58-49 advantage at the 15:33-mark. Goucher started to claw their way back into the contest cutting their deficit to 65-61 with 10:09 remaining in the second half. Murphy sparked a 15-0 run to extend the Bears lead to 80-61 at the 6:19-mark as a pair of steals, an offensive rebound, and an assist lifted Ursinus to a double-digit lead. The Gophers responded by cutting their deficit to as low as 11, but Ursinus connected on their free-throws down the stretch enroute to the 93-81 victory.
Ursinus shot 59% (36-of-61) from the floor, 28.6% (4-of-14) from three-point range, and 70.8% (17-of-24) at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Gophers shot 41.8% (28-of-67) from the field, 28.6% (10-of-35) from deep, an 62.5% (15-of-24) at the free throw line. The Bears held a 64-32 lead from points within the paint, while scoring 15 points off 14 Gophers turnovers.
The Bears return to action on Thursday, December 5th as they travel to Madison, New Jersey for a non-conference matchup against FDU-Florham starting at 7 p.m.
