Women's Basketball Bested by Gettysburg on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus Women's Basketball team was defeated 67-48 by No. 24 Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action during their regular season home finale at Helfferich Hall.

Despite the loss, the Bears (14-10, 10-9) clinched a berth in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the first time since the 2018-19 season after McDaniel was defeated by Muhlenberg later in the afternoon.

Prior to the contest, the Bears honored its five graduating seniors: Sarah DiLello, Kelly Grant, Alison Lisanti, Maria D'Aulerio, and Natalie Mehl.

Junior Chinwe Irondi led the team with 17 points while grabbing eight rebounds and sophomore Madison Smith recorded a double-double at 11 points and rebounds apiece.

After Gettysburg opened the game with a three-pointer, the Bears knotted things back up at three at the 6:45-mark. The Bullets responded with another three-pointer and did not lose the lead again in the contest. Gettysburg's hot-shooting the first quarter helped them gain a lead by as many as 17 at 24-7 at the 1:16-mark. The Bears closed the first quarter with five straight points to make it a 24-12 contest. The Bullets built their lead back up to 19 points at 31-12 before the Bears fought their way down to a 10-point deficit at 31-21 with nine straight points. That would be as close as Ursinus would get as Gettysburg held a 38-27 advantage at the half. Irondi scored the first four points of the third quarter and made it a 41-31 game at the 8:05-mark of the third quarter. However, the Bullets used an 11-1 burst to go up 52-32 with 3:21 left in the third quarter. After the run, the Bears got no closer than 15 points the rest of the game.

The Bears shot 31.6 percent (18-of-57) from the field and just 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from three-point range. Ursinus went 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the free throw line and each team grabbed 36 rebounds apiece. Meanwhile, the Bullets shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field and 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from three-point range. Gettysburg went a solid 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line and Alayna Arnolie paced the way with 24 points behind scoring 14 in the first quarter.

Ursinus will return to action one week from today on Saturday, February 17th as they will travel to Dickinson for their regular season finale at 2:00 p.m.
