ASHLAND, Va. – The Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team was unable to overcome a fast start by Randolph-Macon as they dropped a 16-10 contest to the Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon in their season opener.
Three Bears scored two goals in the contest and sophomore
Harry Sweitzer led the team with three points behind two goals and one assist. Junior
Christopher Pucciarelli notched two goals and first-year
Jared Laskin netted two in his collegiate debut. Senior defenseman
Jeff Douglas matched his career-high of four caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
Sweitzer got the Bears on the board at the 11:33-mark of the first quarter but Ursinus did not score again for a span of 18 minutes. This allowed the Yellow Jackets to score eight straight goals to go up 8-1. Pucciarelli ended the run with a goal at the 7:33-mark of the second quarter to only be answered by two more Randolph-Macon goals that made it 10-2. The Yellow Jackets took a lead as big as 14-3 at the 12:33-mark of the third quarter before the Bears outscored them 7-2 the rest of the way.
The Bears held a 41-37 shot advantage for the game and a 27-21 edge in shots on goal. Each team grabbed 27 ground balls and the Yellow Jackets held a slight advantage in faceoff wins at 15-14. However, the Yellow Jackets went 3-of-4 on man-up opportunities while the Bears went just 1-of-5. Senior goalkeeper
Jonathan Singer made five saves in the full 60 minutes and suffered the loss. Jack Twomey made 13 saves in 57:13 to earn the win for Randolph-Macon.
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday, February 21st as they will host Western Connecticut State in their home opener at 4:00 p.m.
