Baseball Upended by No. 11 Misericordia

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team scored runs in three consecutive innings but were unable to overcome an early deficit falling to No. 11 Misericordia University, 12-5 on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Dan Bass got the start on the mound for the Bears and faced some trouble in the top of the first inning as the first two Cougar runners reached base. After a lineout to centerfield, Bass picked a runner off before a strike out ended the Misericordia scoring opportunity. Ursinus put two runners on base in the bottom half of the frame, but a runner was picked off as the Bears stranded a runner on first via a strikeout.

The Cougars took an early 2-0 lead in the second as a one-out single down the right field line platted two baserunners. Ursinus escaped the jam when sophomore left-fielder Kyle Rosenfeld threw a Cougar runner trying to advance to third base. Rosenfeld collected the Bears opening base hit in the bottom half of the second, but was stranded on first as a strikeout ended the frame.

Misericordia added two more runs in the top of the third as a free pass and back-to-back hits extended the Cougars lead to 4-0. Ursinus responded with a run of their own during their chance at the plate as junior Jakob Cantor led off with a walk and came around to score on a double down the left field line by classmate Jordan Williams. The visitors extended their lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning after capitalizing on two free passes and two base hits. Ursinus quickly recorded the first two outs of the inning, before five straight batters came to the plate. The Bears escaped the jam as junior Kieran Hollander collected a ground out to end the frame.

First-year Barritt Ross led off the bottom half of the frame with a double down the right field line, but a strikeout and pop out jeopardized the Bears scoring opportunity. With two outs, sophomore George Nestor singled up the middle to bring the Bears deficit to 7-2. The Cougars extended their advantage to 10-2 in the fifth as eight batters came to the plate, while capitalizing off three free passes and two base hits. In the bottom half of the inning, Williams tallied his second hit of the day behind a single into left center. He advanced to second on a pass ball while junior Andrew Richter reached base via a walk. Sophomore Shane Beaver drove a double down the right field line to score Williams while Ursinus had two runners in scoring position with no outs. The Bears stranded the runners in scoring position as a fielders' choice, a caught stealing, and a ground out ended the frame.

Misericordia added two more runs in the later frames and held a 12-3 advantage entering the bottom half of the eight inning. After Ross led off with a walk, sophomore Mitchell Garber collected his first collegiate base hit and RBI with a double down the right field to score Ross from first. After a fly out, junior Jude Gilhool tallied his first base knock for the Red and Old Gold with a single up the middle to score Garber from second. Unfortunately, Ursinus was unable to overcome the early deficit and fell by a score of 12-5.

On the mound for the Bears, junior Connor Bogansky and first-year Ryan Barrow highlighted the day for Ursinus. Bogansky pitched two scoreless innings allowing just one hit and fanning four batters, while Barrow closed out the ninth allowing just one batter to reach base via a walk. At the plate, Williams was the lone Bear to finish with two hits, while Ross and Garber each added their collegiate base hits for Ursinus.

The Bears will return to action on Wednesday, February 28th as they host Marywood University for a 3 p.m. start from Thomas Field.
