Softball Downed by No. 16 Moravian in Doubleheader

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team was swept by No. 16 Moravian in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Snell Softball Field.

GAME 1: Moravian 10, Ursinus 0 (5 inn.)

After a scoreless first, the Greyhounds got on the board with a two-run two-out single that made it 2-0. Moravian hit a two-run home run that made it 4-0 in the top of the third before extending its lead to 6-0 with a two-run single. Ursinus loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third before a force out at home ended the threat. Moravian hit its second home run of the game in the top of the fourth, a three run shot, that made it 9-0 before getting another run across in the top of the fifth. The Bears got runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth before the final out was recorded.

GAME 2: Moravian 7, Ursinus 3

A triple and single to lead off the game gave Moravian the initial 1-0 lead, but the Bears knotted the game at one in the bottom half of the inning when senior Sara Sullivan hit a two-out single that scored junior Samantha Mallen from second. A strong relay throw from senior Maddie Solow to junior Rachel Hartman and home tossed out a Greyhound runner trying to score from second in the top of the second inning to keep the score knotted at one. First-year pitcher Miranda McIlvaine worked around a second and third one out situation in the top of the fourth with a strikeout and fly out. However, the Greyhounds finally broke through in the top of the sixth with three runs to go up 4-1 behind the first six batters reaching base. Ursinus refused to go away as junior Stephanie Wichman came through with a two-out two-run double to cut the lead to 4-3. Moravian countered with three more runs in the top of the seventh and set the Bears down to complete the game.

Mallen tallied three hits combined in the doubleheader while Sullivan went 2-of-3 with an RBI in game two. Senior Sarah DiLello went 2-of-2 from the plate in game number one for the Bears.

The Bears return to action on Thursday March 21st as they will host Elizabethtown for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
