CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 16-12 win on the road over DeSales on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Bears improved to 2-2 overall while the Bulldogs of the MAC Freedom fell to 1-3 overall.
The 1-2 sophomore duo of
Lars Homan and
Aidan Kirk paced the Bears with a combined seven goals in the contest. Homan tallied a career-high four goals for Ursinus while Kirk notched his second three-goal game of the season. Sophomore
Harry Sweitzer registered a career-high six points behind five assists and one goal while senior
Drake Kasoff capped a strong week with two goals.
DeSales came out strong out of the gate and scored the first three goals of the game to gain the early advantage. Kirk ended the run at the 7:08-mark of the first quarter and first-year
Jared Laskin followed with a goal 49 seconds later to make it 3-2. DeSales got a goal back to make it 4-2 to only be answered by a goal off a clear from senior defenseman
Paul Army that brought the high-scoring 1st quarter to 4-3. The Bears closed the first quarter out with back-to-back goals following another Bulldogs goal to tie the game at five. Homan gave Ursinus its first lead at 6-5 with 9:41 left in the first quarter. The teams traded goals that left the score at 7-7 before the Bears closed out the first half with back-to-back goals from Kirk and Homan that left them up 9-7 at the break.
Homan gave the Bears a 10-7 lead just a minute into the second half and the Bears kept the Bulldogs at bay by responding to a pair of goals in the third quarter. Kirk and Homan kept the run going for Ursinus thanks to feeds from Sweitzer and they held a 12-9 advantage into the fourth quarter. DeSales scored first in the fourth quarter to make it 12-10 but they would get no closer the rest of the game as the Bears kept finding answers to any potential Bulldog runs. Kasoff and sophomore
Chris Bryant closed the game out with back-to-back goals in the final 2:51 of the game.
The Bears held a 44-28 shot advantage for the game and a 31-20 edge in shots on goal. DeSales held a sizable 21-11 edge in faceoff wins along with a 39-32 ground ball advantage, but the Bears forced 28 Bulldog turnovers. Senior goalkeeper
