CAMDEN, NJ. – The Ursinus College baseball team suffered a 10-1 road defeat to Rutgers University-Camden on Monday afternoon from the Camden Athletic Complex.
After earning a 3-2 walk-off victory yesterday, the Bears split the season series after the Scarlet Raptors scored in each of their eight plate appearances en route to the 10-1 score. First-year
Barritt Ross was the hero yesterday, recording the game winning base hit in the ninth inning. Today, he paced the Bears lineup by finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with the Bears' lone RBI.
Ross led off the game with a single into right field and extending his on-base streak to eight consecutive games. The Bears' rally was cut short as a lineout, caught stealing, and strikeout ended the frame and brought the Scarlet Raptors up to the plate. Rutgers-Camden capitalized off two free passes in the bottom half of the inning as an error and groundout allowed an unearned run to score.
The Bears put two runners on base to open the second stanza as sophomore
Shane Beaver led off with a walk and advanced into scoring position as junior outfielder
Peter Balos singled into centerfield. Balos' base hit extended his hitting streak to four games which included six hits over his last three contests. The Ursinus rally was cut short as a fielders' choice and back-to-back strikeouts ended the Bears threat to tie the contest.
The Scarlet Raptors capitalized off the missed opportunity by adding a second run to extend their advantage to 2-0 through the first two frames. During the inning, Rutgers-Camden capitalized off two singles while the lone run scored on a wild pitch. The Bears also cut down a run at the plate during the frame, while a groundout ended the inning. The Bears responded in the top of the third inning as sophomore
Kyle Rosenfeld led off with a leadoff walk and came around to score on a double by Ross. Junior
Jakob Cantor followed up with a single but was caught stealing during the next at-bat. With Ross on third and just one out, junior
Andrew Richter recorded a free pass, but a 4-3 double play ended the frame.
Rutgers-Camden added runs in the third and fourth innings to increase their lead to 4-1 entering the fifth frame. The Bears again put two runners on base in the fifth frame as Rosenfeld led off with a bunt before swiping second base, and Cantor was hit by a pitch. With one out, Rutgers-Camden escaped the jam by collecting an inning ending 6-4-3 double play. The Scarlet Raptors carried the momentum into the bottom half of the inning as back-to-back doubles by Danny Salazar and Auggie Uzdanovics added an insurance run and increased their lead to 5-1. First-year
Ben Couture settled in on the mound and stranded Uzdanovics at third base as a flyout and groundout ended the inning.
The Scarlet Raptors added five runs over the final three innings to capture the 10-1 victory as their pitching staff shined throughout the contest holding the Bears to just six hits. Rutgers-Camden's Jack Murphy recorded his 100th career hit in the contest during the sixth inning.
The Bears return to action tomorrow as they travel to Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania for a non-conference matchup against Gwynedd Mercy University at 3:30 p.m.
