Fast Start Propels Women's Lacrosse over McDaniel, 18-8

WESTMINISTER, MD. – Behind an all-around performance and an impressive first half, the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team earned an 18-8 victory over McDaniel College in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
 

With the victory, Ursinus improved to 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in Centennial Conference play while the Green Terror fell to 6-4 overall and sit at 1-1 in conference play.

 
Senior Mary Michaud and junior Grace Lynch led the Bears offense with four goals apiece, while Micahud added two assists to tie a career best with six points. Junior attack Maeve Leonzi tallied her eighth hattrick of the season with three goals and currently leads the team with 34 goals this season. Sophomore Meghan Vizian collected a team-high four ground balls, while Michaud led the team with three caused turnovers.

 
The Bears quickly grabbed the first goal of the game as senior Bev Lewis corralled the opening draw control before Lynch found the back of the cage to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. Each team was held scoreless for the next six minutes of play until back-to-back goals from Michaud and sophomore Ashley Noto increased the Bears lead to 3-0 with eight minutes remaining in the quarter. During Michaud's goal, she capitalized off a free-position opportunity as she sprinted past two defenders before sneaking her shot past the Green Terror netminder. Noto's goal came at the 8:01-mark as she received a pass behind the net before juking inside her defender and sending a bouncing shot between the goalie's legs for her 11th goal of the season. Both defenses stepped up over the remainder of the first period as the contest entered the second stanza with Ursinus leading 3-0. Sophomore netminder Camille Hubbs tallied a save during that time, while Vizian added a caused turnover.

 
The Bears carried the momentum into the second period as Hubbs recorded back-to-back saves before Michaud added her 12th goal of the season at the 9:36-mark to extend the Ursinus lead to 4-0. Over the next three minutes of play, Ursinus scored a trio of goals to increase their lead to 7-0 with 7:07 remaining in the first half. First-year Jamie Michaud added back-to-back goals before junior Sarah Child found the back of the net for her first goal of the game. Jamie Michaud's first goal came off a free-position opportunity, while Mary Michaud assisted on Child's goal to give Ursinus a seven-goal advantage. At the 5:25-mark, Leonzi scored while the Bears were a woman down, but the Green answered with their opening goal to make the score 8-1. The Bears continued to showcase some stellar defense and held a 9-1 advantage at halftime as first-year Dana DeSiato netted her fourth goal of the season with 11 seconds remaining in the half.
 
  
McDaniel scored the opening goal of the second half as Paris Conord cut the Green Terror deficit to 9-2 at the 14:34-mark. Ursinus quickly answered with three consecutive goals to extend their lead to 12-2 with 7:21 remaining in the period. During the Bears run, Vizian, Lynch, and Leonzi each netted goals, while McCann, Leonzi, and Noto recorded assists on the Bears 3-0 run. The Green Terror responded with back-to-back goals, but Ursinus closed out the period with two goals of their own and held a 14-4 lead. McDaniel collected three of the first four goals in the final period, but a free-position goal from senior Gabrielle Liott at the 7:38-mark kept the Bears lead at 16-7. Lynch and Michaud each scored over the remainder of the final stanza as Ursinus earned the 18-8 Centennial Conference victory.
 
 
Ursinus held a 38-20 advantage in shots, an 18-12 edge in draw controls, and forced a total of 11 caused turnovers. The Bears finished with a 95% (19-of-20) clear percentage while holding the Green Terror to a clear percentage of just 72% (16-of-22). Hubbs (4-3) earned the victory in goal behind nine saves and a save percentage of 52.9%, while McDaniel's Caleigh Kohr suffered the loss after making 10 saves (35.7% save percentage).
 

The Bears return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania for the Anita Deasey Memorial Cup Game against Swarthmore College at 7 p.m.
