Softball Stifles Waynesburg to Earn Split on Day Three in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Ursinus softball team used a fast start and strong pitching to gain a split on their third game day down in Florida on Tuesday morning.

Ursinus was shutout in the first game of the day against Muskingum, 6-0, and bounced back with a 3-1 triumph over Waynesburg in the second game. The Bears record now moves to 2-5 on the season while Muskingum stayed unbeaten at 5-0 and the Yellow Jackets, who were an NCAA Tournament qualifier in 2023, fell to 1-1.

Muskingum 6, Ursinus 0

The Fighting Muskies got on the board in the top of the first with a two-run two-out double to left center field. The Bears advanced runners to second base in each of the first two innings but were unable to push a run across. Muskingum extended its lead in the top of the third with a pair to go up 4-0. The Fighting Muskies saw its first four runners reach in the inning and brough home the runs off a single and fielder's choice. A pair of doubles put runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth and a sacrifice fly sent in a fifth run before a throwing error scored the sixth run on the same play. Ursinus was only able to record two hits the rest of the way.

Ursinus 3, Waynesburg 1

The Bears jumped on the Yellow Jackets early in the top of the first with a pair of runs. Senior Maddie Solow was hit by a pitch and junior Stephanie Wichman advanced her to second with a single. The Bears got on the board when senior Sara Sullivan lined a ball off the Waynesburg centerfielders glove that scored Solow. Wichman came around to score to make it 2-0 one batter later when sophomore Kayla Carr grounded out to second. Sophomore pitcher Christa Andrusiewicz worked out of a first and second jam in the first inning and kept the Yellow Jackets off balanced throughout the contest. Carr extended the Bears advantage to 3-1 in the top of the fifth with a single up the middle that scored Solow from second base. Waynesburg got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with a two out rally behind a double and bloop single to right field that made it 3-1. Andrusiewicz ended the threat with a fly out and sophomore pitcher Riley Coneeny closed the game out with two shutout innings.

Solow went 2-of-3 with two runs scored against Waynesburg and posted a team-high three hits between the two games. Carr drove in two runs for the Bears in the win over the Yellow Jackets.

The Bears return to action tomorrow, March 6th as they will play a doubleheader starting against Penn State Berks at 9:00 a.m. and Simmons to follow at 11:15 a.m.
