FORT PIERCE, FL. – The Ursinus College baseball team fell behind early and were unable to make up the deficit eventually falling 9-3 on Thursday afternoon to Lebanon Valley College.
Senior
Will Kelley and junior shortstop
Jakob Cantor paced the Bears lineup with two hits apiece, while first-year
Barritt Ross and sophomore
Shane Beaver each recorded RBIs. On the mound, Ross and first-year
Ben Couture pitched scoreless outings during the eighth and ninth frames.
Junior lefty
Kieran Hollander received his second start of the season for the Bears and allowed only one hit through the first three innings of work. He escaped a bases loaded jam in the first behind a fielder's choice and retired six consecutive batters until a walk in the third. With two outs and a runner of first, Hollander collected a fly out for the final out of the frame. Ursinus had their scoring opportunity cut short in the opening frame behind a 6-4-3 double play, before putting a runner on third with just one out in the third. Cantor led off the frame with a single before advancing to second on a throwing error and moving to third on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, with just one out, Cantor would be stranded at third as a foul out to first and a ground out ended the frame.
The Flying Dutchmen struck for four runs in the fourth inning as they collected five hits in the frame including a pair of extra base knocks. The Bears nearly answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but back-to-back strikeouts stranded junior
Jordan Williams at third base. Lebanon Valley loaded the bases in the fifth with just out, but Hollander ended his outing with a pop up and a ground out to strand the bases juiced.
Sophomore
George Nestor and Kelley recorded base hits in the fifth as a sacrifice fly from Beaver allowed Ursinus to cut their deficit to 4-1. With runners on first and second, the Bears rally was halted by a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame. The Flying Dutchmen added four runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to extend their lead to 9-1 through the first seven innings of play. Ross and Cantor recorded RBIs for the Bears, but the lead proved to be too large as they fell 9-3.
The Bears will return to action tomorrow morning to close out their spring training trip with a doubleheader against Elizabethtown College starting at 10 a.m.
