Baseball Bested by No.14 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD. – Behind a five run fifth inning, the Ursinus College baseball team fell to No.14 Johns Hopkins, 10-1, on Saturday evening from Babb Field.

The Blue Jays only collected seven hits on the evening, while improving to 16-6 overall and 4-0 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Bears fall to 9-13 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. First-year Brandon Sullivan paced the Bears lineup with his second multi-hit game of his career behind a 2-for-4 effort. Classmate Barritt Ross extended his on-base streak to 13 games, finishing 1-for-4 at the plate and adding an RBI while juniors Jakob Cantor and Jude Gilhool each added base hits.

In the bottom of the first inning, Cantor reached base via a two-out single into left field. He later swiped second base, but would be stranded in scoring position as a strikeout ended the frame. Junior righty Mike Scheller received the start and retired the Blue Jays in order to end the first frame as he induced a strikeout, groundout, and flyout.

Johns Hopkins struck first in the bottom of the second inning as three free passes loaded the bases with just one out. A sacrifice fly and a single brought home the first three runs of the game, before Scheller escaped the jam with a groundout to short. In the third inning, Sullivan recorded a two-out single into left field but after swiping second base, he would be picked off to end the inning. Scheller retired six straight Blue Jays during the third and fourth innings

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Johns Hopkins loaded the bases behind a hit-by-pitch and two free passes leading Ursinus to go into the bullpen. Junior Kieran Hollander relieved Scheller on the mound and the Blue Jays doubled their lead to 6-0 as a double down the left field line cleared the bases. Hopkins would go on to add a run on another extra base hit and single to extend their lead to 8-0 heading into the sixth inning.

Ursinus bounced back in the top of the sixth inning as Sullivan came around to score the Bears first run. After back-to-back flyouts to open the frame, Sullivan recorded a two-out infield single before advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch. Ross followed up with a single into centerfield to score Sullivan from second base and make the score 8-1. The Bears' rally ended there as a strikeout ended the frame.

Hollander kept the Blue Jays at bay in the bottom half of the frame as Ursinus would nearly added a run in the seventh, but back-to-back infield groundout ended the frame. Johns Hopkins added two insurance runs in the seventh and closed out the contest for the 10-1 Centennial Conference victory.

The Bears return to action tomorrow at noon as they wrap up their season series with the Blue Jays before returning to Thomas Field on Monday for a non-conference matchup against DeSales.
