Women's Soccer Earns Shutout Victory over Penn State Berks, 5-0

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's soccer team used four second half goals enroute to a 5-0 victory over Penn State Berks on Sunday afternoon from Patterson Field.

With the victory, Ursinus improved to 2-0 on the season while the Nittany Lions fell to 0-2 to start their campaign. Today's victory marks the third consecutive season that the Bears have won their first two contests of the season.

Ursinus tallied the open shot of the contest as senior Kayla Harvey's shot on goal was saved by the Nittany Lions at the 2:23-mark. Each team traded a shot on goal before much of the first half was a battle between the midfields. The Bears offense broke through in the 37th minute as junior Adriana Careless scored her first goal of the season behind an assist from first-year Kaleigh Evans. After receiving a pass down the sideline, Evans sent a cross into the box finding Careless with space in front of the net. Careless received the pass and sent an arching shot over the Nittany Lions' netminder to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. The Bears fired the final two shots of the first half and took a one-goal lead into halftime.

Ursinus opened the second half by recording three of the first four shots before breaking through with a goal by junior Paige Flaugh at the 53:52-mark. Careless sparked the attacking opportunity as she found Flaugh with space 25-yards away from the goal. Flaugh took one touch before firing a shot towards the far post for her first goal of the season. Ursinus carried the momentum from Flaugh's goal as first-year Emma Woch connected with Evans to stretch the Bears lead to three during the 55th minute. Woch sent a bouncing cross into the box finding Evans whose one timer found the back of the net. During the 72nd minute, sophomores Josie Parson and Madison Bjorndahl connected on a scoring opportunity to stretch the Bears lead to four. The Bears added their final tally in the closing minutes as sophomore Kalli Roskos assisted senior Rianne Moll on her first collegiate goal to give Ursinus the 5-0 shutout victory.
Senior goalkeeper Mandy Carideo earned the victory in goal collecting two saves over 78 minutes of action, while Penn State Berks' Sophia Gonzalez was dealt the loss after tallying five saves. Ursinus held an 18-6 advantage in shots, a 3-1 edge in corner kick opportunities, and 10-3 lead in shots on goal.

The Bears return to action on Wednesday, September 4th as they travel to Eastern University for a 3:30 p.m. start against the Eagles.
