Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match to Widener

ASTON, Pa. – The Ursinus Volleyball team dropped a tough 3-1 match (19-25, 19-25, 25-17, 24-26) to Widener at the Neumann Knights Invitational on Friday evening.

Senior Caroline Sherman registered a game-high 18 kills along with five digs and three aces. Junior Mel Eglinton added 15 kills, eight digs, and six blocks while sophomore Daejah Bazemore posted 11 kills, four blocks, and one ace. Senior Rachel Bernard led the Bears with 25 assists plus tallying four aces and junior Erin Dychdala posted 23 assists.

Widener jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the first set and maintained an advantage over the Bears throughout the first half of the set. The Pride built a lead up to 12-8 to only have Ursinus take eight of the next 12 points to tie the set at 16. However, Widener broke a 17-all tie by winning six of the next seven points and eventually the set itself.

After the Bears won the first two points of the second set, the Pride responded by winning eight of the next 10 points to go up 8-4. Ursinus got within two points of Widener at 10-8 and again at 13-11, but the Pride had an answer both times. Widener won eight of the next 10 points to go up 21-13 and fended off an Ursinus rally that cut the deficit to as low as 22-18.

Needing a fast start to the third set, Ursinus finally got one by winning the first five points. Widener rallied to get within one point at 7-6 before the Bears won six straight points to take a 13-6 advantage. The Bears continued to pull away and led by as many as 11 points at 22-11. The Pride made one last charge by winning five straight points to make it a 22-16 game, but Ursinus slammed the door by winning three of the next four points.

Widener flipped the script to start the fourth set by winning the first five points and worked their way out to a 6-1 lead. Down 8-4, the Bears won seven of the next eight points to go up 11-9 and built a lead by as many as four at 15-11. The Pride fought back from down 17-13 by winning eight of the next 10 points to go up 21-19. Ursinus won three straight points to reclaim the lead and traded points which left them on set point at 24-23. However, back-to-back kills from the Pride and an attack error ended the match.

The Bears close out the Neumann Invitational tomorrow, September 14th as they will take on DeSales at 10:00 a.m. before finishing the day up with Rowan at 12:00 p.m.
