A Late Rally Sparks Men's Soccer Past Penn State Brandywine

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A pair of late goals lifted the Ursinus College men's soccer team past Penn State Brandywine, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon from Patterson Field.

With the victory, Ursinus improved to 4-0-1 on the season while the Nittany Lions fell to 1-2-2 overall. Junior midfielder Enver Desic paced the Bears offense behind a career-high two goals and an assist, while first-year Ethan Ervin tallied his first collegiate goal. Senior Joshua Coster and junior Marko Balic added the other two scores for Ursinus.

The Bears opened the contest by firing each of the first three shots, before the Nittany Lions responded with back-to-back attempts during the ninth minute. Ursinus tallied with the opening score at the 13:54-mark as Desic dished an assist to Coster to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. The opportunity began as senior Alexander Woll had his shot blocked, before Coster pass to Desic on a give and go just outside the box. Coster received the pass before turning around and using a right footed shot to find the far post for his second goal of the season. Ursinus added to their advantage during the 28th minute as a handball was called on Penn State Brandywine after a Bears' corner kick. Desic stepped up for Ursinus and drilled a shot towards the right post for his second goal of the season.  Brandywine quickly responded with a goal of their own as Francis Sarpong cleaned up a rebound in front of the goal to cut the Nittany Lions deficit to one with 17 minutes remaining in the half. The remainder of the first half was battle of the midfields as the Bears entered halftime with a 2-1 lead.

Penn State Brandywine answered to start the second half as Sarpong added his second goal to even the score at two apiece during the 51st minute. The Bears' offense started to amplify the pressure as they recorded five consecutive shots, before a penalty kick from Ervin extended the Bears lead to 3-2. Ervin was fouled within the box, before converting the penalty kick by sending a shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal for his first collegiate score. The Nittany Lions quickly responded once again as they added the equalizer with 15 minutes remaining to tie the score at three apiece. Ursinus added the final tallies as a goal from Balic and Desic gave the Bears a 5-3 victory. Balic's goal came on a cross from Coster, while Desic created a one-on-one opportunity and sent his shot over the head of the goalkeeper for his second goal of the game.

Ursinus held a 27-11 advantage in shot, an 11-7 edge in shots on goal, and an 8-4 lead in corner kick opportunities. Matik earned the victory in goal behind four saves, while Brandywine's Will Manarpaac suffered the loss tallying six saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, September 17th as they host Eastern University for a non-conference matchup starting at 7:30 p.m.
