COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College Women's Volleyball team cruised to a straight-set 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-9) victory over Immaculata in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Helfferich Hall.
With the win the Bears improved to 7-4 overall while the Mighty Macs of the Atlantic East Conference fell to 2-8 overall.
The Bears used a balanced offense to hold control of the match from start to finish. Senior
Caroline Sherman led the match with eight kills while adding four digs and junior
Mel Eglinton followed with seven kills, three aces, and nine digs. Junior
Lexi Couch recorded six kills and classmate
Reena Robinson posted five kills, three aces, and two digs. Setters
Rachel Bernard and
Erin Dychdala combined for 26 assists with Bernard having 16 with three aces while Dychdala had 10 assists plus four aces.
Immaculata gained an early 3-1 lead in the first set before the Bears got it rolling with six straight points to go up 7-3. Ursinus then ran off eight straight points to go up 15-5 behind Dychdala tallying all four of her aces in that stretch. The Bears did not let their lead fall below eight points in the remainder of the set and built their lead up to as many as 12 points. Ursinus hit .296 as a team in the first set and recorded eight of their 13 aces.
Ursinus kept their foot on the gas to start the second set by winning the first four points and eventually extended their lead to 8-1. The Bears maintained a healthy advantage throughout the second set and blew it open with six straight points after leading 14-6 and went up 20-6. Ursinus won five of the last eight points to close out the set.
The Mighty Macs stayed competitive to start the third set and traded the lead with the Bears three times early on. Down 5-4, Ursinus took control by taking 11 of the next 12 points to go up 15-6. Ursinus extended its lead to 22-8 before closing out the match by taking advantage of a trio of Mighty Mac errors to win the third set 25-9. The Bears hit a sizzling .579 as a team in the third set and held Immaculata to hit -.042 as a team.
The Bears return to action on Saturday, September 28th as they will compete in the Cedar Crest tri-match against the host Falcons and Goucher starting at 12:00 p.m.
