CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ursinus Gymnastics team opened the 2025 season in a big way by winning the Cortland Meet, which also featured four other NCGA East schools on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears finished first among the five teams with a final team score of 186.825 behind totals of: 47.300 on the vault, 45.125 on the bars, 46.200 on the beam, and 48.200 on the floor. Utica finished second with a team score of 186.650, Cortland was third with a 186.400, Rhode Island in fourth at a 183.525, and Springfield rounded out the teams with a total of 180.225. The Bears score was the highest season-opening score in head coach
Kim Valenti's career and the highest season-opening score for the Bears since scoring a 186.875 against West Chester in 2017.
Ursinus got things rolling on the bars and junior
Kylie Ruggiero picked up right where she left off last season as she led the team with a score of 9.325. The NCGA Championship qualifier finished seventh overall and classmate
Brianna Duffy was right behind by tying for eighth with her score of 9.200.
The Bears moved over to the beam on their second rotation and had their team score of 46.200 led by sophomore
Erin Roe, who finished fifth overall with her score of 9.525. Senior
Madison Zimmerman was second among the Bears on the beam by posting a score of 9.375 and tied for ninth overall. Junior
Sidney Schreiber posted a score of 9.325 and was the third-highest Ursinus gymnast on the event.
Following a bye, the Bears took command of the meet on the floor by leading all teams with their team score of 48.200 and had all six gymnasts finish with a total of at least 9.550. Senior
Megan Matteucci tied for first place on the floor behind her dazzling score of 9.800. Schreiber tied for fifth overall with her score of 9.675 and the sophomore trio of Roe,
Lucy Warburton, and
Arianna Ellis all finished with a total of 9.550. Senior
Isabella Scarpetti completed the impressive run with a score of 9.550.
Ursinus completed its season-opening statement on the vault by having three gymnasts finish in the top-10. Roe led the way again with her score of 9.525 that was good for fourth overall and first-year
Michaela Duffy impressed in her collegiate debut by totaling a 9.500 that tied for fifth overall. Schreiber tied for ninth overall with her score of 9.475 and senior
Erin Stubbs was right behind at a 9.450. Matteucci recorded a score of 9.350 and Zimmerman rounded out the vault totals with her 9.325.
Roe competed in the all-around and received a combined score of 37.625 that was third among the eight gymnasts that competed in all four events.
The Bears return to action on Friday, January 17th as they start a busy weekend by competing at the Penn Quad Meet alongside the host Quakers, Towson, and Yale at 6:00 p.m.
