ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Ursinus Men's Basketball team held off a late charge by Elizabethtown and earned a 93-90 win on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.
With the win, the Bears improved to 7-5 overall as they wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays of the Landmark Conference fell to 5-6 overall.
Senior
Trevor Wall delivered the game-winning three-pointer with seven seconds left and finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. He also added five assists and three steals as he maintained his Centennial Conference scoring lead. Senior
Marlin Wise scored a season-high 19 points while posting seven rebounds and a career high five blocks. Junior
Mohamed Toure tallied 13 points and four rebounds while sophomore
Luke Nieman was the fourth Bear in double figures for scoring with 11.
Ursinus came out flying by scoring the first 12 points of the game and holding the Blue Jays without a point until the 16:36-mark of the first half. Elizabethtown ended their drought with a three-pointer, but the Bears extended their lead out to 18 points at 28-10 with 11:06 left in the first half. Ursinus took a lead by as many as 19 points at 43-24 with 4:39 left in the first half after senior
Cole Grubbs knocked in a layup. However, the Blue Jays closed the half on an 18-7 run to get within 50-42 at the break.
Much like the first half, Ursinus started strong and quickly built their lead back out to 16 points at 60-44 just four minutes into the second. The Bears maintained a double-digit lead over the next few minutes and went up 72-54 following a three-pointer from Toure at the 11:59-mark. Elizabethtown began its climb back with an 11-3 burst that made it 75-65 with 9:16 left in regulation. Ursinus went back up 14 points at 81-67 with 7:25 remaining in the second half before the Blue Jays used a 16-5 run to pull within three points at 86-83 at the 3:55-mark. A pair of free throws from Wall put Ursinus up 90-84 with 2:18 remaining but the Blue Jays tied the game with a 6-0 run with 35 seconds left after a turnover and missed free throw from the Bears. Wall delivered his game-winning three-pointer on the next possession and Wise blocked a potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Bears shot 50.7 percent from the field (36-of-71) and 39.3 percent (11-of-28) from three-point range. Ursinus went 10-of-14 (71.4%) from the free throw line and held a 40-32 rebounding advantage that led to a sizable 23-7 edge in second chance points. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays went 52.1 percent (37-of-71) from the field after shooting 64.5 percent in the second half. Elizabethtown went 41.2 percent (8-of-19) from three-point range and 8-of-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday. January 11th as they will host Washington College for its Centennial Conference opener at 1:00 p.m.
