Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Bested by No. 15 Swarthmore

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus women's soccer team started strong, but eventually fell against No. 15 Swarthmore College, 3-1, on Saturday evening at Patterson Field.

The loss drops Ursinus to 6-5-2 overall, and 1-4-1 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Garnet improved to 10-1-2 on the season, and remain a perfect 6-0 in conference play.

Despite an early 5-0 advantage in shots, it was the Bears who got on the board first. A penalty kick by sophomore Kaleigh Evans soared into the right side of the goal, as Ursinus took the lead at the 13:28 mark. The Garnet quickly struck back, however, as Nicole Jensen tapped in a pass from Charlotte Carleton to tie the game at one in the 21st minute. Swarthmore then made the most of their own penalty opportunity, when Celia Kanellakos converted during the 26th minute, giving the Garnet a 2-1 advantage.

The Bears defense held strong throughout the opening minutes of the second half, with a couple of saves by sophomore goalkeeper Mallory Toomey. Swarthmore capitalized on a free-kick opportunity in 57th minute by Ava Gizzie which gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage. The Bears recorded a pair of shots over the remainder of the contest but were unable to find the back of the net and eventually fell by a 3-1 score.

Swarthmore held a 30-7 advantage in shots, and a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. They also collected a 5-1 edge on corner kicks. Swarthmore's goalie Dahlia Bedford earned the victory with two saves, while Toomey suffered the loss behind tying a career-high with 10 saves.

The Bears will look to rebound Wednesday, as they head to Bryn Mawr College for a Centennial Conference matchup against the Owls at 4 p.m.
