Men's Soccer Comeback Falls Short Against Muhlenberg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – A first-half goal proved to be the difference as the Ursinus men's soccer team fell to Muhlenberg, 2-0, on Saturday at Patterson Field.

With the loss, Ursinus dropped to 2-6-2 on the season and 0-4-0 in Centennial Conference play. Muhlenberg improved to 6-0-4 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference.

The Bears tallied three of the first four shots, with their opening chance saved by the Mules' goalkeeper. In the 18th minute, Muhlenberg struck first by capitalizing on a throw-in to take a 1-0 lead. Sam Roberts found Owen Zoeller, who flicked a pass to Saleem Diakite for the game's opening goal. Ursinus generated a shot on goal in the 21st minute and earned a corner kick in the 34th but was unable to convert either opportunity, and the contest went into halftime with the Mules up by one.

The Bears denied a scoring chance early in the second half but were unable to capitalize on three consecutive shots in the 49th minute. Still trailing 1-0 in the 83rd, Ursinus pushed forward, but Muhlenberg took advantage of a counterattack chance to double its lead. After a Bears throw-in was deflected toward midfield, Ursinus attempted to play the ball back into the box, but it deflected off a Muhlenberg defender and led to a one-on-one scoring opportunity. Ursinus was unable to overcome the deficit and dropped the match, 2-0.

Muhlenberg held a 17-9 advantage in shots, a 6-4 edge in shots on goal, and a 10-1 lead in corner kicks. First-year goalkeeper Jaden Ottley took the loss with four saves, while Muhlenberg's Ben Mulford earned the shutout with four saves.

The Bears return to action Tuesday, October 7th, when they host Stockton at 7:30 p.m.
