Women's Soccer Downed by Johns Hopkins in Season Finale

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus women's soccer team battled throughout, but were unable to defeat No. 18 Johns Hopkins falling, 2-0, on Saturday evening on Senior Day.

With the loss, Ursinus closes out the season with a 9-6-3 overall record and a 3-5-2 mark in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays improved to 13-4-1 on the season and 8-2 in conference play. Johns Hopkins will enter the Centennial tournament as the No. 2 overall seed and will host a semifinal match on Thursday evening. Ursinus narrowly missed the playoffs, placing seventh within the conference standings.

The Bears celebrated six seniors prior to the match as Kalli Roskos, Adriana Careless, Alyssa Himmelreich, Sydney D'Averso, Paige Flaugh, and Alicia Page were each recognized for their dedication and commitment to the women's soccer program over the last four years.

Johns Hopkins recorded the first few scoring chances of the contest, tallying four shots within the first 12 minutes of play. Sophomore netminder Mallory Toomey and the Bears defense were credited with three saves to keep the game tied. With 15:05 remaining in the first half, Page nearly put Ursinus on the board with a shot from within the middle of the box. Junior Josie Parson played a free kick into the box that ricochet off a Blue Jays defender to Page. Page took a touch before sending a left-footed shot that was blocked by the Blue Jays defense. The remainder of the first half was a battle of the midfields as neither team was credited with a shot on goal and entered halftime tied at zero.

After a pair of shots from Johns Hopkins to open the half, Ursinus nearly broke the scoreless drought in the 57th minute. With Hopkins holding possession in the Bears' defensive third, junior defender Maddie Jolie stepped in front of a Blue Jays pass and found a Bears' midfielder. The next pass found Careless, and she sent a through ball down the left sideline to first-year Fiona Sanders. Sanders made a touch on the ball, creating a one-on-one opportunity with the Blue Jay's netminder. Unfortunately, the goalie beat Sanders to the loose ball to keep the contest tied. Just under two minutes later, Johns Hopkins capitalized on a scoring chance to gain a 1-0 lead with 30:16 remaining. Unfortunately, Ursinus was unable to find the equalizer over the remainder of the contest and eventually fell, 2-0.

Johns Hopkins held a 17-4 lead in shots, a 9-2 edge in shots on goal, and totaled a 9-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Toomey suffered the loss in goal for the Bears behind seven saves, while Ella Kruntchev tallied the victory for the Blue Jays with two saves.
