Women's Hoops Downed by Immaculata

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus women's basketball team took a lead into the fourth quarter but was upended, 63-58, by Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon inside Helfferich Hall.

 
With the loss, Ursinus drops to 2-2 overall, while the Mighty Macs improve to 2-0. Junior Colleen Blackman paced the Bears' offense with a team-high 16 points and three rebounds. Senior Ava Possenti added 15 points, four rebounds and a game-high five steals. Senior Madison Smith recorded 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

 
Blackman opened the contest with a three-pointer at the 9:01-mark to give Ursinus an early lead. Immaculata responded with eight straight points before Blackman connected on her second triple to make it 8-6 with 6:45 remaining in the quarter. After a three-pointer by the Mighty Macs, Blackman and Smith combined for four straight points to cut the Bears' deficit to one. Immaculata extended its advantage to 16-10 before Ursinus scored the final five points of the quarter and trailed 16-15 heading into the second period.
 

The Bears bounced back to open the second stanza, scoring nine straight points to regain a 24-16 advantage. Possenti scored five straight points to start the quarter before Smith added a pair of layups to push the lead to eight with 7:20 left in the first half. Immaculata answered with an 8-3 run before junior Emma Afflerbach tallied a layup with 2:20 remaining to extend the Bears' lead to 29-24. Blackman then buried a pair of three-pointers, but Immaculata responded with seven of the final 10 points in the quarter and faced a 35-31 halftime deficit.
 

The Mighty Macs opened the second half with eight straight points to regain a 39-35 lead with 7:42 left in the quarter. First-year Anna Chimento and junior Erin Glanz followed with baskets for the Bears, sparking a 10-0 run to give Ursinus a 47-42 advantage. Immaculata connected on consecutive layups with less than two minutes to play, but Smith knocked down a pair of free throws to close out the quarter and give the Bears a 49-46 lead.
 

Both teams traded baskets to open the final quarter before a three-point play by the Mighty Macs tied the contest at 53 with 6:31 remaining. After a shot clock violation on the Bears, Immaculata hit a three-pointer to regain a 56-53 lead. Smith and Blackman each scored for Ursinus, but the Mighty Macs answered both times and maintained a three-point advantage with 2:25 left. Possenti hit a free throw at the 1:17 mark to cut the deficit to one, but Immaculata knocked down three of its final four attempts at the line to seal the 63-58 decision.
 

The Bears shot 34.4% (21-for-61) from the field, 27.3% (6-for-22) from three-point range and 83.3% (10-for-12) at the free-throw line. The Mighty Macs shot 42.3% (22-for-52) from the floor, 60% (9-for-15) from beyond the arc and 76.9% (10-for-13) at the line. Immaculata's Olivia Ettorre led all scorers with 19 points, while Abby Grillo added 12 points and five rebounds.
 

Ursinus returns to action on Tuesday, November 18th, when it travels to Alvernia University for a 6 p.m. start.
